JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The University of North Florida baseball team fell behind 8-1 after three and a half innings, but scored runs in four consecutive innings, but were unable to overcome the deficit, dropping a 10-7 decision to Florida Gulf Coast on Sunday afternoon at Dusty Rhodes Field at Harmon Stadium. The Ospreys (35-16, 16-8 A-Sun) finished the home schedule with a 24-9 overall record.
The Ospreys allowed five unearned runs after three errors in the game to fall behind by seven runs. North Florida trimmed the deficit to two but was unable to complete the comeback. UNF allowed nine unearned runs over the weekend dropping a 7-5 decision on Saturday and the three-run game on Sunday.
Offensively, North Florida recorded 10 hits on the day, scoring seven runs. The Ospreys received multiple-hit performances from
Spencer Herrmann,
Kyle Brooks and
Tyler Marincov. Herrmann finished the day with three hits, while Brooks and Marincov each had a pair of base knocks. Marincov finished the day with two doubles, while Brooks added a double.
Nick Karmeris hit his first collegiate home run in the game. In addition, N. Karmeris led the team with two runs scored, while Marincov had a team-best two RBI.
On the mound, starter
Michael Renner took the loss – his first of the season. Renner scattered eight hits over 3.2 innings of work. He allowed eight runs, but only three earned runs. He walked a batter and struck out one. Renner gave way to fellow senior
Kyle Westwood, who tossed the final 5.1 innings. Westwood allowed two runs on four hits. The hurler allowed just one walk, while striking out seven, including catching five batters looking.
Florida Gulf Coast was the first team to score, plating a run in the top of the second inning. With a runner on base, FGCU's Nick Rivera hit a home run to right center field to put the Eagles in front 2-0.
North Florida responded with a run in the bottom of the inning.
Donnie Dewees led off the inning with a single through the right side of the infield and advanced to second base on a fielding error by the right fielder. The freshman moved to third on a ground out. N. Karmeris and Brooks each drew free passes to load the bases with just one out. Dewees came in to score on a wild pitch, cutting the lead in half. The Ospreys were unable to score the equalizer as a strikeout and a fielder's choice ended the inning.
The Eagles broke the game open in the top of the fourth inning. FGCU scored six runs on five hits and a pair of UNF errors. The Eagles sent 11 batters to the plate in the decisive inning. The leadoff runner singled to second base but was erased on a fielder's choice. The inning continued as the Ospreys committed a fielding error, leaving the Eagles with a pair of runners on base. With two on and one out, FGCU used a RBI double to score the first run of the inning. A RBI single pushed the score to 4-1 and left Florida Gulf Coast with runners on the corners. The Osprey Defense was able to retire the lead runner as the Eagles attempted a safety squeeze. Renner threw home to
Corey Bass to retire the lead runner for the second out of the inning. With runners on first and second and two outs, Florida Gulf Coast extended the inning with a RBI single up the middle. A wild pitch moved both runners into scoring position. FGCU plated a pair of runners on a two-RBI double. The next batter reached on a second error of the inning, which allowed the lead runner to score. The Eagles continued the inning with a walk, which prompted a pitching change by the Ospreys. Westwood caught the first batter he faced looking to end the inning.
Trailing 8-1, the Ospreys mounted a comeback in the bottom of the fourth inning. With two outs, N. Karmeris hit his first collegiate home run – a solo shot to right field.
North Florida chipped into the deficit with a pair of runs in the bottom of the fifth inning. Bass led off the inning with a single to center field and advanced to a second on a Herrmann single to center. With one out,
Paul Karmeris loaded the bases as he was hit by a pitch. Marincov doubled down the left field line, scoring Bass and Herrmann and narrowing the margin to 8-4.
Florida Gulf Coast added an insurance run in the top of the sixth inning. With one out, the Eagles used a walk and a single to place runners on the corners. A deep fly ball scored the lead runner on the sacrifice fly, extending the lead back to five runs.
The Ospreys cut the margin to just three runs with a pair of runs in the bottom of the sixth inning. N. Karmeris led off the inning by reaching base on a fielding error by the Eagles. Brooks doubled to left center to place a pair of base runners in scoring position. With one out, Herrmann singled through the right side to score N. Karmeris and advance Brooks to third. Wielbruda reached base on a fielder's choice that erased Herrmann, but scored Brooks to cut the lead to 9-6.
North Florida added a run in the bottom of the seventh inning. Marincov led off the inning with a double to right center field. He stole third base to move to within 90 feet of home.
Drew Weeks scored Marincov on a RBI groundout to second base, cutting the deficit to 9-7.
The stolen base by Marincov was the 20th of the season for the junior. Marincov is the first Osprey since Max Oxendine (2003-06) in 2004 to record 20 or more stolen bases in a season. Marincov trails Oxendine by one steal for ninth in the all-time UNF single season record books.
Florida Gulf Coast scored one final run in the top of the ninth inning. N. Rivera hit his second home run of the game to provide the final score of 10-7 as the Ospreys were unable to answer in the final frame.
North Florida hits the road for the final four regular season games of the season. The Ospreys travel to Statesboro, Ga. for the final nonconference game of the season against Georgia Southern on Tuesday night at 6:00 p.m. Live stats and in-game tweets will be available throughout the game.
