JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The University of North Florida baseball team surrendered four unearned runs as a result of three errors as the Ospreys (35-15, 16-7 Atlantic Sun) dropped a 7-5 decision to Florida Gulf Coast (33-17, 15-8 A-Sun) on Saturday afternoon at Dusty Rhodes Field at Harmon Stadium. The three-game A-Sun series is now even at one game apiece setting up the rubber match on Sunday afternoon.
Leading 3-0, North Florida surrendered seven runs in the final four innings, including four unearned runs en route to the loss.
Offensively, the Ospreys recorded nine hits, including three extra base hits. Senior
Paul Karmeris and freshman
Donnie Dewees each belted home runs in the game, while junior
Tyler Marincov added a double. P. Karmeris, Dewees and senior
Joe Wielbruda each had two hits apiece. P. Karmeris and Wielbruda each scored two runs apiece, while Dewees led the way with four RBI on the day.
On the mound, senior
Nick Allbritton earned a no decision in his final home game as an Osprey. The right-hander tossed 6.1 innings, scattering six hits. Allbritton allowed three runs, but did not allow an earned run. The Perry, Fla. native walked three batters, but notched three strikeouts. Allbritton was aided by the arm of fellow senior
Corey Bass to help retire base runners. Bass picked off two runners on the day, including throwing out one on a strike out, throw out double play.
Allbritton gave way to
David Trexler, who worked the next 1.2 innings. Trexler was charged with the loss. The junior allowed four runs – three earned runs – on three hits, walking one and striking out one.
Ryan McMahon pitched the final inning of the game. The junior allowed a hit in a scoreless inning notching a strikeout.
North Florida was the first team to score, plating two runs in the bottom of the first inning. Wielbruda led off the inning with an infield single to the shortstop. With two outs, Dewees put the Ospreys in front with one swing as the freshman blasted a two-run home run to right field. The home run was his fifth of the season and put North Florida ahead 2-0.
The Ospreys added a run in the bottom of the third inning. With two outs, P. Karmeris hit a home run just over the walk in right center field. The home run was the senior's fourth of the season and increased the UNF advantage to 3-0.
Florida Gulf Coast answered in the top of the sixth inning with three unearned runs aided by a pair of errors by North Florida. With one out, FGCU used a double to left center field to place a runner in scoring position. He advanced to third on a single through the right side of the infield. With runners on the corners, the next batter hit a ball to the pitcher, but an errant throw allowed the runner to reach safely. The base runners were able to advance on the error and a second error on the play allowed the second run of the inning to score. Allbritton struck out the next batter, but the Eagles continued the inning with a RBI single up the middle. The Ospreys ended the inning with a fielder's choice, but with the score tied 3-3.
The Eagles took the lead in the top of the eighth inning. FGCU's Sean Dwyer led off the inning with a solo home run to straight away center field to give the Eagles their first lead of the game. The next batter walked. A ground ball to short looked to have recorded the first two outs of the inning, but the lead runner was ruled safe. With one out, the next batter flied out to right field, advancing the runner to third. An RBI single up the middle gave the Eagles a 5-3 advantage. FGCU continued the inning with a single and a hit batter loaded the bases. The Eagles used a wild pitch by the Ospreys to score the lead runner and an errant throw on the play allowed a second run to score. The inning ended on a line out to left field with Florida Gulf Coast leading, 7-3.
The Ospreys trimmed the deficit to two with a pair of runs in the bottom of the eighth inning. With one out, Wielbruda singled through the left side to give North Florida a base runner. P. Karmeris followed with a single to shallow left field. Marincov walked to load the bases. Dewees singled up the middle to score Wielbruda and P. Karmeris. The Ospreys were unable to score any more runs in the inning as a double play ended the inning.
In the final inning, UNF was unable to score, setting up the rubber match in the final game of the series.
North Florida and Florida Gulf Coast conclude the series on Sunday afternoon at 1:00 p.m. at Dusty Rhodes Field at Harmon Stadium.
