Ospreys Edge Eagles in Extras

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The University of North Florida baseball team claimed an 8-7 victory in 11 innings over Florida Gulf Coast in the first game of a three-game Atlantic Sun Conference series on Friday night at Dusty Rhodes Field at Harmon Stadium. The Ospreys (35-14, 16-6 A-Sun) received a walk-off single from Ryan Roberson in the bottom of the 11th inning to snap the Eagles' (32-17, 14-8 A-Sun) NCAA-best 10-game winning streak.
 
Tied at 7-7 heading into the bottom of the 11th inning, North Florida's Tyler Marincov led off the inning with a single up the middle. The junior advanced to second base as Donnie Dewees drew a walk. With two on and no outs, Roberson drove a ball up the middle of the infield to score Marincov from second base and give the Ospreys their fifth extra-inning victory of the season.
 
Offensively, the Ospreys collected 15 hits on the night, including four extra-base hits. Kyle Brooks, Robeson and Marincov each had three hits apiece in the game to lead UNF. Marincov finished the game a double shy of hitting for the cycle. The junior recoded his fifth home run of the season and his team-leading sixth triple. Marincov finished the game with a team-best three runs scored and three RBI. Brooks hit his second home run of the season and scored two runs. Roberson had three singles, including his second walk-off hit in the last five games. Dewees and Paul Karmeris each added two hits apiece in the game with one of P. Karmeris' hits going for extra bases.
 
On the mound, Corbin Olmstead earned his fourth victory, tossing 5.0 innings in relief. Olmstead scattered five hits in his season-high five innings, allowing three runs. The freshman did not issue a walk and struck out a season-best six batters. Olmstead notched three 1-2-3 innings in his outing.
 
Starter Tommy Organ earned a no-decision in his team-best 13th start. The senior scattered seven hits in 6.0 innings of work. He was charged with four runs. The southpaw struck out three batters while walking just one.
 
Florida Gulf Coast was the first team to score, plating a pair of runs in the top of the third inning. The Eagles scratched the scoreboard after back-to-back doubles to start off the inning. With a runner on second and no outs, FGCU advanced the runner with a sacrifice bunt. The next batter continued the inning with a RBI single up the middle to give the guests a 2-0 lead. The Ospreys were able to end the inning with a pop up and a fielder's choice, limiting the Eagles to just two runs.
 
North Florida took the lead with four runs in the bottom of the fifth inning. With one out, Brooks hit a solo home run to left field to put the Ospreys on the scoreboard. With two outs, Joe Wielbruda singled through the right side of the infield to continue the inning. P. Karmeris singled to give UNF a pair of base runners. With two on and two outs, Marincov put the Ospreys in front with a two-RBI triple to right center field. Dewees followed with a RBI single through the right side of the infield to put the Ospreys in front 4-2.
 
The Ospreys added two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning. Drew Weeks walked to start the innings and moved to second base on a Nick Karmeris sacrifice bunt. Brooks singled to give North Florida runners on the corners. The Ospreys successfully executed a double steal to score Weeks from third. On the play, Brooks was able to move over to third base on an errant throw by FGCU. Corey Bass hit a deep fly ball to center field, scoring Brooks on the sacrifice fly and increasing the Osprey lead to 6-2.
 
The Eagles chipped into the lead with a pair of runs in the top of the seventh inning. Nick Rivera led off the inning with a solo home run to left center field. Back-to-back singles continued the inning for the Eagles. After a pitching change, FGCU advanced the runners with a sacrifice bunt. Florida Gulf Coast used a sacrifice fly to score the second run of the inning and trim the UNF lead to 6-4.
 
North Florida got a run back in the bottom of the inning. With one out, Marincov hit a solo home run to left center field. The home run was the junior's fifth of the season and the 19th of his career.
 
Florida Gulf Coast knotted the score at 7-7 in the top of the eighth inning. With one out, the Eagles used a single to place a runner on base. With two outs, FGCU was able to continue the inning with a single to left field, leaving the Eagles with runners on the corners. Florida Gulf Coast used a single through the left side of the infield to plate the first run of the inning. Colton Bottomley tied the ballgame with a two-RBI double to left center field. The Ospreys ended the inning with a strikeout, but entered the bottom of the inning tied.
 
Neither team was able to score until the Ospreys scored the winning run in the bottom of the decisive 11th inning. Defensively, the Ospreys used a double play and three strikeouts to post 1-2-3 innings in the final three frames of the game.
 
North Florida and Florida Gulf Coast continue the series on Saturday afternoon at 1:00 p.m. at Dusty Rhodes Field at Harmon Stadium. The Ospreys will honor their nine seniors prior to the game. Live stats, live audio, live video and in-game tweets will be available throughout the game.
