No. 66 Men's Tennis Battles to 4-3 Senior Day Win Over FGCU

4/7/2013 7:35:00 PM

Box Score JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- The University of North Florida men's tennis team sent its seniors off with a hard-fought win, earning a tough 4-3 victory over Florida Gulf Coast on Sunday afternoon in the final home match of the 2013 season.

The Ospreys started the day with a sweep of the doubles point that included a pair of come-from-behind victories. After seniors Moritz Buerchner and Julien Belair earned an 8-4 win at No. 1, FGCU led in both remaining matches.

Sophomore Norbert Nemcsek and senior Daniel Sotomarino trailed 6-3 and were down a pair of breaks at No. 2, when they reeled off five straight games to come away with an 8-6 victory that clinched the point for UNF. Seniors Pedro Davisson and Leonardo Nahar then staged their own comeback, earning a pair of breaks late in the match to grab a hard-fought 8-6 win at No. 3 and complete the sweep.

Playing with an adjusted singles lineup from the onset, UNF fell behind early after FGCU grabbed a win at No. 1 and Davisson was forced to retire at No. 4 due to injury. Davisson had controlled the match to that point and had already captured the opening set.

However, the Ospreys bounced back in short order, as Nahar earned a 6-3, 6-4 win at No. 5 to knot the match at 2-2. Belair then put the Ospreys back on top with his 11th-consecutive singles win for UNF, a 6-3, 6-3 triumph at No. 3 that gave UNF a 3-2 advantage. Belair's unbeaten streak dates back to a February 21 loss to No. 20 Baylor, a span of 45 days.

Sophomore Timo Kranz clinched the match for the Ospreys in a 6-2, 6-4 win at No. 6, raising his record in A-Sun matches to 3-0 this season. All three of the sophomore's victories in the conference have come in straight sets.

"This was a really special day for us, as we got to honor the five guys that have meant so much to this program," Head Coach Adam Schaechterle said. "We faced some difficult circumstances today with some injuries, but I'm very happy with the way we battled to secure the win. These seniors have launched the UNF program into national relavence and I'm incredibly proud of how they've competed this weekend and throughout the season."

With the win, UNF moves to 12-7 on the year, including a pristine 6-0 record in Atlantic Sun Conference play. The Ospreys also concluded the home portion of their 2013 schedule, wrapping up the year with an 8-1 mark within the confines of UNF Tennis Complex. FGCU falls to 10-9 with the loss and sits at 4-3 in A-Sun action.

The Ospreys will be back on the courts on Thursday, April 11, when they travel to new A-Sun foe Northern Kentucky for a match scheduled to begin at 2:30 p.m. EST.
