Boxscore

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The University of North Florida completed the first ever sweep of Jacksonville University with a 12-1 victory at John Sessions Stadium on Saturday afternoon. The Ospreys (32-12, 14-4 Atlantic Sun) jumped out to an 8-0 lead and cruised to a 12-1 win over the Dolphins (14-29, 7-11 A-Sun).

North Florida entered the weekend needing just three of the remaining seven points to win the SunTrust River City Rumble for the second consecutive season. The UNF baseball and softball teams combined for six points on the weekend with each team sweeping JU, giving the Ospreys a 14.5-6.5 advantage in the Old Wooden Barrel standings.

On the mound, Michael Renner improved to 8-0 on the season. The senior scattered eight hits in 7.0 innings of work, but limited Jacksonville to just one run. Renner did not walk a batter and struck out five. He recorded three 1-2-3 innings with the help of a pair of double plays, including a double play he initiated. In addition, Renner retired the side in the bottom of the fourth inning with three strikeouts.

Renner gave way to Evan Incinelli who worked the final two innings of the game without allowing a run. Incinelli allowed a hit in 2.0 innings of work without issuing a walk and striking out one.

The Ospreys' pitching staff was aided by plenty of offense. North Florida scored 12 runs on the day on 16 hits, including five extra base hits. Six different Osprey players recorded multiple hits on the day. Joe Wielbruda, Paul Karmeris and Nick Karmeris each recorded three hits apiece, while Ryan Roberson, Drew Weeks and Corey Bass added two hits each. Karmeris, Donnie Dewees and Roberson for most runs scored in the game with two.

For the second day in a row, North Florida jumped out to an early lead in the first inning. Wielbruda and P. Karmeris started the game with back-to-back singles. Wielbruda advanced to third base as the Dolphins' defense was able to turn a double play. With two outs, Dewees walked to give UNF a pair of base runners. Roberson followed with a two-RBI single, scoring Wielbruda and Dewees. On the play, Roberson advanced to second base as JU threw home to try to retire Dewees. Roberson moved 90 feet closer to home as the Dolphins' pitcher was called for a balk. Weeks gave UNF runners on the corners as the sophomore drew a walk. Roberson and Weeks both advanced one base on the second balk called in the inning, scoring Roberson. N. Karmeris drove home the final run of the inning with a RBI double to left center field, giving the Ospreys a 4-0 advantage.

The Ospreys increased their lead to 7-0 with three runs in the top of the second inning. Wielbruda started the inning with a single up the middle. He advanced to second base on the third balk call of the game. P. Karmeris followed with a walk. A deep fly ball to right field allowed Wielbruda to move over to third base. With runners on the corners, Dewees reached base on a fielder's choice. On the play, P. Karmeris was able to slide in safely into second base as the JU defender dropped the ball. Wielbruda came home to score on the play. P. Karmeris and Dewees each advanced on base on a deep fly ball to left field. Weeks followed with a two-RBI two-out single to left center field.

Jacksonville plated its only run of the contest in the bottom of the third inning. The Dolphins used a leadoff double and a RBI single to score a run, trimming the Ospreys' lead to 8-1. JU finished the inning with three hits, but Renner was able to escape the inning without allowing any more runs to score.

Neither team was able to score over the next four innings, but North Florida halted the scoreless streak with a run in the top of the eighth inning. With two outs, P. Karmeris doubled down the left field line to give the Ospreys a base runner. Tyler Marincov followed with a RBI single to right center field to push the UNF advantage back to eight runs.
