JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The University of North Florida baseball team used a RBI single off the left field wall from
Ryan Roberson in the bottom of the 11th inning to give the Ospreys a 5-4 win over Georgia Southern on Tuesday night at Dusty Rhodes Field at Harmon Stadium. The Ospreys (33-12) over the Eagles (23-21) gives UNF 1,000 victories in program in history.
Roberson stepped to the plate with two outs and runners on first and second and delivered the game-winning hit off of the left field wall, scoring
Tyler Marincov from second base and giving North Florida its 1,000th victory.
The Ospreys improved to 33-12 overall on the season and 23-7 at Harmon Stadium. North Florida has now played in seven extra-inning games this season, posting four wins.
Offensively, North Florida scored five runs on 14 hits.
Paul Karmeris led the team, finishing the game 4-for-6 with a pair of doubles and two runs scored. Marincov posted three hits on the night, driving in a run and scoring a pair of runs, including the game-winner. Roberson finished the night with two hits and two RBI.
On the mound, the Ospreys used four pitchers.
Kyle Westwood earned the start. The senior allowed two runs – one earned run – on five hits. He did not walk a batter while striking out a team-best six.
Spencer Herrmann entered the game in relief of Westwood. Herrmann worked 1.0 innings allowing a pair of runs on two hits with a walk and a strikeout.
Evan Incinelli tossed the next 4.2 scoreless innings. He allowed no runs on two hits with a pair of strikeouts.
Corbin Olmstead earned the victory pitching the final 1.1 innings of work. The freshman improved to 3-0 on the year, keeping the Eagles scoreless while allowing just one hit and striking out a pair.
North Florida was the first team to score, plating a run in the bottom of the first inning. With one out, P. Karmeris doubled to right center field. He advanced to third base on a groundout. The senior came home to score as
Donnie Dewees singled up the middle.
Georgia Southern responded with a run in the top of the third inning. With one out, GSU's Brent Pugh singled to the shortstop. He advanced to second on a passed ball and moved to third on a ground out. Pugh came in to score on a wild pitch by the Ospreys, tying the game at 1-1.
The Ospreys regained the lead in the bottom of the third.
Joe Wielbruda was hit by a pitch to start the inning. P. Karmeris delivered a bunt single just out of reach of a diving catcher to give UNF a pair of base runners. Marincov plated Wielbruda with a RBI single up the middle, giving the Ospreys a 2-1 lead.
In the top of the fourth inning, the Eagles answered with a run to tie the game at 2-2. With one out, T.D. Davis doubled to right center field. Georgia Southern used back-to-back singles to score the tying run.
GSU took the lead in the top of the sixth inning. A walk followed by back-to-back singles scored the first run of the inning, giving the Eagles a 3-2 advantage. Georgia Southern continued the inning as Ben Morgan hit a RBI double to right center field. The Ospreys escaped further damage with a pop up to second base, a strikeout and an inning-ending groundout.
Neither team was able to score until UNF knotted the game at 4-4. P. Karmeris led off the inning with a double down the left field line. Marincov singled to short, which left the Ospreys with runners on first and second. The two base runners advanced on a ground out. With runners on second and third, the Ospreys benefited from an Eagle error. The error allowed both P. Karmeris and Marincov to score, tying the game at 4-4.
The game remained 4-4 until the bottom of the 11th inning. With two outs, Marincov singled to shallow center field. Dewees was hit by a pitch to move Marincov into scoring position. Roberson lifted a 2-2 pitch to deep left field over the outfielder's head to score Marincov and give the Ospreys the walk-off win.
North Florida returns to action over the weekend as the Ospreys head to DeLand, Fla. for a three-game Atlantic Sun Conference series with Stetson.
