JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The University of North Florida baseball team posted a 10-4 victory over crosstown rival Jacksonville on Saturday afternoon at John Session Stadium, giving the Ospreys (31-12, 13-4 A-Sun) the three-game Atlantic Sun Conference series over the Dolphins (14-28, 7-10 A-Sun). Baseball's win combined with a win by the UNF softball team in the opening game of a doubleheader with JU secured the Old Wooden Barrel for the second consecutive season for the Ospreys in the SunTrust River City Rumble.
North Florida jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the first inning and never looked back as the Ospreys scored 10 runs on 15 hits for their fifth consecutive A-Sun series win.
Offensively, all nine starters notched at least one hit with six different Ospreys recorded two hits in the game, led by
Tyler Marincov. The junior outfielder finished the game 2-for-3 with two doubles, four runs scored, two RBI, a walk and a hit by pitch.
Donnie Dewees and
Drew Weeks also recorded doubles in the game. Dewees,
Corey Bass,
Kyle Brooks,
Nick Karmeris and
Joe Wielbruda all finished the game with two hits apiece. N. Karmeris joined Marincov with a team-best two RBI on the day.
On the mound,
Nick Allbritton picked up his fourth win of the season. The senior worked 5.1 innings, scattering five hits. He surrendered two runs – one earned run – allowing a pair of walks and striking out five batters. Allbritton gave way to
David Trexler. The junior worked 3.2 innings en route to his second save of the season. Trexler surrendered two runs on six hits and three walks with a strikeout.
North Florida was the first team to score, jumping out to a 5-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Wielbruda singled to lead off the game and
Paul Karmeris followed with a single through the left side of the infield. Marincov doubled to plate Wielbruda and give UNF a 1-0 advantage. Dewees followed with a RBI single. With one out,
Drew Weeks doubled to left field to score the third run of the inning. N. Karmeris continued the inning with a RBI single. With runners on the corners, the Ospreys attempted a double steal. The Dolphins got the out at second base, but on the play Weeks was able to come in and score, giving North Florida a 5-0 advantage.
Jacksonville chipped into the North Florida lead with a run in the bottom of the second inning. The Dolphins led off the inning with an infield single. The next batter singled to right field, advancing the lead runner to third base. On the play, the batter attempted to advance to second, but Marincov threw out the runner at second base for the first out of the inning. JU used a sacrifice fly to score the runner on third and cut the UNF advantage to 5-1.
The Ospreys added a run in the top of the fifth inning. With one out, Marincov walked and advanced to third on a Dewees double to left center field.
Ryan Roberson delivered a RBI single to extend the Osprey lead back to five runs.
The Dolphins benefited from an Osprey miscue to score an unearned run in the bottom of the fifth inning. The leadoff batter reached on a fielding error by UNF. With one out, the runner advanced to third on a single to right center field. The run came around to score on a single, trimming the North Florida lead to 6-2.
UNF upped its advantage to 8-2 with a pair of runs in the top of the seventh inning. Marincov was hit by a pitch to start the inning. The junior stole second base to move into scoring position and advanced to third on a wild pitch. With two outs, Marincov came in to score on a fielding error by the Dolphins. On the play, Weeks, who reached on the error, was able to move into scoring position. N. Karmeris continued the inning with a RBI single to left field.
JU plated a run in the bottom of the seventh inning. With one out, Jacksonville used back-to-back singles and a walk to load the bases. The next batter singled through the right side of the infield to score the lead runner. The Dolphins made a costly base running mistake and the runner on second was caught in a run down, leaving the home team with two outs and runners on the corners. A ground ball back to the pitcher ended the inning and the Dolphin's threat.
North Florida added a pair of insurance runs in the top of the eighth inning. Wielbruda walked to start the inning and moved into scoring position on a wild pitch. A deep fly ball to right field advanced Wielbruda to within 90 feet of home. Marincov doubled down the left field line for the first run of the inning. Marincov stole third base and came around to score on a throwing error by the Dolphins.
Jacksonville attempted a comeback in the bottom of the ninth inning. The leadoff batter doubled to start the inning. The Ospreys recorded the first out on a deep fly ball to right field. JU used a single to place runners on the corners with just one out. The runners advanced a base on a wild pitch. Back-to-back walks loaded the bases with just one out, but a double play ended the game, thwarting any chance of a Dolphins rally.
