Ospreys Trounce Owls, Claim Series

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The University of North Florida baseball team earned an Atlantic Sun Conference series victory over Kennesaw State with a 14-3 win on Sunday afternoon at Dusty Rhodes Field at Harmon Stadium. For the Ospreys (29-12, 11-4 A-Sun), it was the first series victory over the Owls (21-21, 9-9 A-Sun) since 2006.
 
North Florida collected 16 hits on the day, scoring 14 runs in the ballgame. All nine batters in the starting lineup recorded at least one hit, while six different Ospreys recorded multiple hits on the day. Donnie Dewees paced the team with three hits, including a home run and a double. Corey Bass, Paul Karmeris, Tyler Marincov, Drew Weeks and Joe Wielbruda each added two hits apiece. Along with Dewees, Marincov, Weeks and Ryan Roberson each recorded doubles on the day. Dewees and Marincov led the team with four RBI each; while Bass had a team-best three runs scored.
 
On the mound, Michael Renner picked up his team-leading seventh victory of the season. The senior lefthander recorded a quality start, going 6.0 innings allowing just three runs. He scattered seven hits, walking one and striking out a batter. Renner posed a pair of 1-2-3 innings and faced just one batter over the minimum through the first three innings.
 
Kyle Westwood entered the game in relief of Renner. Westwood tossed 2.0 scoreless innings, surrendering just one hit and striking out three batters. He punctuated a perfect seventh inning with back-to-back strikeouts to close out the inning. He gave way to Spencer Herrmann who threw a perfect ninth inning. The Jacksonville native struck out two of the three batters he faced in the final frame, closing out the game with a strikeout.
 
After a scoreless first inning for each team, North Florida broke the game open with eight runs in the second inning to take an early lead that the Ospreys would not relinquish. Roberson led off the inning with a walk and Weeks followed with a double to center field to give UNF a pair of runners in scoring position. With one out, Kyle Brooks drew a four-pitch walk to load the bases. The Ospreys scored the first run of the game as Bass was able to draw a RBI walk. Wielbruda followed with a four-pitch walk to score the second run of the inning and leave the bases loaded. Following a pitching change by Kennesaw State, P. Karmeris delivered a RBI single to center field. With the bases loaded and one out, Marincov cleared the bases with a three-RBI double to left center field. Dewees, the ninth batter of the inning, homered to right field to put the Ospreys in front 8-0 after just two innings of play.
 
The Ospreys added five runs in the bottom of the third inning. Brooks and bass led off the inning with back-to-back single to give UNF a pair of base runners. Wielbruda singled down the left field line, scoring Brooks for the first run of the inning. Bass advanced to third base on a deep fly ball. Marincov followed with a walk, loading the bases. Dewees doubled to right field to score Bass and Wielbruda. Roberson plated Marincov and Dewees with a two-RBI double to right center field to put the Ospreys ahead 13-0.
 
The Owls chipped into the Ospreys lead in the top of the fourth inning with three runs. KSU led off the inning with a single to left center field. With one out and a man on first, the Owls' Chris McGowan put Kennesaw State on the scoreboard with a two-run home run to right field. The Owls continued the inning with a double, followed by a single. With runners on the corners, KSU scored a run on a fielder's choice. The Ospreys ended the inning with a pop up to first base, leading 13-3.
 
North Florida added an insurance run in the bottom of the fourth inning. With one out, Bass singled through the right side of the infield. Wielbruda followed with a single and P. Karmeris loaded the bases with a four-pitch walk. Marincov reached base on a fielder's choice, driving home Bass and extending the Ospreys' lead to 10 at 14-3.
 
Renner, Westwood and Herrmann combined to toss the final five innings, holding the Owls scoreless and securing the victory and series win for the Ospreys.
 
North Florida will not play a midweek game this week as the Ospreys will be taking final exams. UNF resumes play on Friday, April 26 as the Ospreys begin a three-game Atlantic Sun Conference series on the road at crosstown rival Jacksonville.
