Box Score JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. -- The University of North Florida men's tennis team cruised to its second Atlantic Sun Men's Tennis Tournament Final in as many years, as it rolled to a 4-0 victory over fourth-seeded Florida Gulf Coast on Saturday evening at ETSU Tennis Complex.
The Eagles gave UNF, who entered the tournament as the top seed thanks to its Atlantic Sun Regular Season Championship, all it could handle in the doubles points. After seniors
Daniel Sotomarino and
Leonardo Nahar cruised to an 8-2 win at No. 3, the Ospreys had to earn their way to their 12th doubles point in 13 matches.
Senior
Moritz Buerchner and sophomore
Norbert Nemcsek, ranked No. 16 in the nation as a pair, found themselves trailing 7-4 at No. 1 before they battled back to a 7-7 tie. Meanwhile, senior
Julien Belair and sophomore
Timo Kranz were locked in 6-6 and 7-7 deadlocks at No. 2 before the duo was able to earn a break and put the match away at 9-7 to put UNF up 1-0 over the Eagles.
The Ospreys carried their momentum into singles play, winning the opening set in five of the six matches en route to the shutout. Nemcsek struck first, cruising to a 6-2, 6-2 win at No. 3 that raised his 2013 record to 13-8. Kranz followed shortly after with a 6-0, 6-3 win at No. 6that moved him to 5-4 on the year and put UNF up 3-0.
With his 14th-consecutive singles win, Belair sealed the victory for the Ospreys. The senior, whose streak is a UNF record, rolled to a 6-2, 6-2 win at No. 3, boosting his season record to 17-5 and sending UNF to the championship match.
“The guys looked very sharp today,” Head Coach Adam Schaechterle said. “FGCU played a great doubles point and pushed us in the top two spots. We feel very prepared for what we know will be a battle tomorrow.”
With the win, the Ospreys advance to the A-Sun Tournament Final, where they will face six-time defending tournament champion East Tennessee State, the second-seeded team in the tournament. Earlier this year, UNF took down the Bucs on their home courts in a 4-3 decision. Belair, Nemcsek and Buerchner all earned singles wins in that contest.
