Men's Tennis Romps In 6-1 Win at USC Upstate

SPARTANBURG, S.C. -- The University of North Florida men's tennis team extended its winning streak to eight matches in resounding fashion on Saturday evening, taking down USC Upstate on the road, 6-1.

The match, scheduled to start at 10 a.m. was pushed back almost seven hours due to a light rain that fell through most of the day. After on-and-off precipitation halted in the afternoon, the courts were able to be dried in time for the match to start at 4:50 p.m.

The Ospreys started the day in typical form, winning their ninth consecutive doubles point to go up 1-0 on the Spartans. Seniors Pedro Davisson and Leonardo Nahar struck first, winning six straight games at No. 3 to roll to an 8-2 win.

After Upstate grabbed a win at No. 2, seniors Mortiz Buerchner and Julien Belair grabbed an 8-4 win at No.1 to seal the point for UNF. It was the duo's eighth win in their last nine matches.

UNF carried the momentum from doubles into singles play, earning quick wins in the first two completed matches. Sophomore Norbert Nemcsek opened the session with a 6-1, 6-0 win at No. 3, shortly before Belair closed out his opponent at No. 2 with a 6-0, 6-1 win to put the Ospreys up 3-0.

Nemcsek and Belair have each caught fire in the last month, as both players' wins constituted their eighth consecutive singles win.

After the Spartans pulled a point back with a win at No. 1, Nahar sealed the match for UNF with a win at No. 5. Moments later, sophomore Timo Kranz earned his second straight win with a victory at No. 6.

Davisson later sealed the final score with a win at No. 4 to give the Ospreys the 6-1 victory. With the win, UNF moves to 10-6 on the season, including a 4-0 mark in Atlantic Sun Conference play.

UNF will be back on the courts on Friday, April 5, when it travels to Tallahassee, Fla. to take on Florida State in a match scheduled to begin at noon.
