TAMPA, Fla. -- The University of North Florida men's tennis team fell in heartbreaking fashion on Friday afternoon, dropping a 4-3 decision to USF that came down to the sixth and final singles match.
The Ospreys had battled back from trailing 2-0 and 3-2 to push the match to the final singles duel.
"I give a lot of credit to the players and coaches at USF," Head Coach Adam Schaechterle said. "They competed extremely well and just didn't give in when we had opportunities to take the match."
After the Bulls won the first two doubles matches to earn the doubles point, they quickly won the first singles match to put UNF in a 2-0 hole. After senior
Daniel Sotomarino cruised to a 6-2, 6-2 victory at #2 singles and senior
Moritz Buerchner grabbed a 6-4, 6-4 win at #1 singles to pull the Ospreys back, USF added another point to go up 3-2.
Senior
Pedro Davisson battled back from a lost first set to earn a 3-6, 6-1, 6-4 victory at #5 singles to tie things for a second time at 3-3, before USF clinched the match in a marathon match at #4 singles, as sophomore
Norbert Nemcsek fell to
Juan Carlos Acuna-Gerard, 5-7, 6-2, 5-7.
The Ospreys will be in action again on Monday, February 11, when they face Louisiana at 2 p.m. in their first home match of the 2013 season. The Rajin' Cajuns are ranked 75th in the country in the latest ITA rankings. They mark the fifth ranked team that UNF has faced in its first six matches.
"We are playing one of the toughest schedules in the country for a reason," Schaechterle said. "We risk losses like this to get tougher as a team, and we will. We hope to see the community at our home opener on Monday."
