KENNESAW, Ga. -- The North Florida basketball team picked up their second consecutive victory after outlasting Kennesaw State for a hard fought 60-52 road victory Thursday at the KSU Convocation Center.
Despite just making 2 of 15 three-pointers, the Ospreys (10-15, 5-7 ASun) forced 16 turnovers and dominated scoring in the paint, 32-18, to earn their eight consecutive win over the Owls (2-21, 1-10).
Seven different players scored and handed out assists in a balanced attack for the Ospreys. Parker Smith finished with 14 points to lead UNF with Travis Wallace adding 13 and seven rebounds. Andy Diaz (9 pts) and BaeBae Daniels (8 pts) combined for 17 points and seven rebounds off the bench.
Markeith Cummings led KSU finishing with 17 points, including 14 in the second half.
"Another great team effort and team victory tonight," said UNF head coach Matthew Driscoll. "I thought our guys were really locked in defensively tonight and excecuted our plan well. Our bench gave us another big lift especially Andy (Diaz) and BaeBae (Daniels). We just have to keep doing what we're doing and moving forward."
Kennesaw jumped out to an early 9-0 lead as the Ospreys didn't score first points until the 13:54 mark. The Ospreys answered over the next seven minutes outscoring the Owls, 22-3, to grab a lead they would not relinquish. Late in the opening half, KSU pulled within three, but UNF scored the final two baskets of the period to carry a 29-22 lead into the halftime break.
The two squads traded baskets for much of the second half as North Florida would maintain a lead from four to eight points throughout the period. KSU attempted a late charge but the Ospreys converted 8 of 10 free throws in the final two minutes to secure the victory.
North Florida continues its weekend road swing Saturday when the Ospreys visit Mercer for a 4:30 p.m. tipoff.
