Ospreys Claim Another Come From Behind Victory

Boxscore

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Trailing 3-0 late, the University of North Florida baseball team mounted another come from behind victory, scoring two runs in the seventh and ninth to notch a walk-off win over The Citadel, 4-3, and win the three-game series at Dusty Rhodes Field at Harmon Stadium.

North Florida started the rally with a pair of runs in the seventh inning. With a runner on base, Donnie Dewees homered to cut into the three-run deficit. The Ospreys capped off the comeback with two runs in the final frame. UNF manufactured a run on a pair of base hits and an error by The Citadel. With a runner on third base, Tyler Marincov provided the game-winning single to give the Ospreys the victory.

The Ospreys, who improved to 5-2 on the year, have posted three come from behind victories this season. In addition, North Florida rallied to force extra innings against The Citadel in the first game of the series before falling in the 11th. Against Bethune-Cookman, the Ospreys needed 11 innings to win, despite never trailing.

Offensively, North Florida scored four runs on eight hits. The offense was almost nonexistent for the first six innings as UNF recorded only one base knock through the first six frames. In the final three innings, the Ospreys scored four runs on seven hits, including a two-run home run by Dewees. The freshman also added a double to finish the day with a pair of extra base hits. Corey Bass also added a pair of hits and scored the winning run on Marincov's RBI single.

On the mound, Michael Renner picked up his first victory of the season, working 3.1 innings of scoreless relief. The lefty surrendered just one hit and did not issue a walk. Renner struck out three batters in his outing. Starting pitcher Nick Allbritton earned a no-decision in his second start of the season. The senior scattered six hits in 5.2 innings of work. Allbritton allowed three runs on the day. He walked three batters, while striking out a pair.

The Citadel was the first team to score, plating a pair of runs in the third inning. The Bulldogs used a single and a stolen base to put a runner in scoring position early in the inning. The inning continued with a single to center field. On the play, the batter advanced to second to leave the visitors with a pair of base runners in scoring position. The Citadel used a single to score the lead runner and a fielder's choice to take a 2-0 lead.

The Bulldogs increased their advantage to 3-0 with a run in the top of the fifth. The Citadel started the inning with a walk and the runner moved into scoring position by stealing second base. A bunt single down the third base line left the Bulldogs with runners on the corners with no outs. Allbritton struck out the next batter, but a sacrifice fly plated the lead runner. The Ospreys closed out the inning with a line out to shortstop.

After being held to just one hit in the first six innings, the Osprey bats came to life in the bottom of the seventh inning. Corbin Olmstead led off the inning with a single up the middle. He came around to score as Dewees belted his second career home run. The two-run shot pulled the home team to within one at 3-2. Paul Karmeris extended the inning with a single through the left side of the infield. He advanced to second on a passed ball by The Citadel. Alex Bacon worked the count full before drawing a walk. A fielder's choice and a fly ball left the Ospreys with a pair of base runners and two outs. Kyle Brooks loaded the bases as he was hit by a pitch; however, a strikeout ended the inning and the UNF threat.

Neither team was able to score a run in the eighth inning. The Bulldogs used a single and a sacrifice bunt to move a runner into scoring position in the ninth, but back-to-back fly balls ended the inning, setting up the comeback finish.

In the bottom of the ninth, Bacon led off the inning with a single up the middle. He advanced to second base on a sacrifice bunt by Nick Karmeris. The Ospreys tied the score as Bass singled through the right side of the infield. Bacon was able to slide in safely under the tag to tie the game at 3-3. Pinch hitter Joe Wielbruda hit a ball to right field that was miss-played by the Bulldogs' outfielder, allowing Bass to reach third and Wielbruda to advance to second. Drew Weeks was intentionally walked to set up a force at every base or a potential double play. With the bases loaded, Marincov delivered a game-winning RBI single through the left side of the infield.

North Florida returns to action on Tuesday, Feb. 26, as the Ospreys travel to Gainesville, Fla. to take on Florida. First pitch is slated for 7:00 p.m.
