GAINESVILLE, Fla. – The University of North Florida baseball team needed extra innings, but came away with a 7-6 victory over the University of Florida on Tuesday night at McKethan Stadium in Gainesville, Fla. The Ospreys allowed two runs in the ninth inning to tie the game, but retook the lead with a run in the 10th to secure the victory.
Tied at the end of regulation, the Ospreys scored a run in the 10th inning that proved to be the game winner.
Alex Bacon led off the inning with an infield single. He moved to second base on a sacrifice bunt by
Kyle Brooks. Bacon moved 90 feet closer to home as the Gators' pitcher balked.
Corey Bass came through with an RBI double to left center field and score the deciding run.
In the bottom of the 10th, the Gators used a throwing error by the Ospreys to place a runner on first base. After a North Florida pitching change, Florida bunted to move the runner into scoring position. With the tying run on second base,
Corbin Olmstead caught the Florida batter looking at strike three for the second out of the inning. After surrendering a walk, Olmstead induced a fly ball to center field to secure the victory for the Ospreys.
Offensively, North Florida recorded 13 hits on the night, including four extra base hits. Four different Osprey players had multiple hits in the game.
Paul Karmeris finished the game with a pair of hits, including a double, and led the team with three runs batted in.
Tyler Marincov, Olmstead and
Joe Wielbruda each had a pair of hits apiece, while
Drew Weeks and Marincov each scored a pair of runs. Weeks finished the game with a triple, while Marincov added a double.
On the mound, six pitchers combined for the 10-inning victory.
Evan Incinelli earned his second victory of the season, while Olmstead entered the game in the 10th to earn his first collegiate save.
David Trexler earned the start for the Ospreys. He worked 3.1 innings, allowing three runs on six hits with a pair of strikeouts. He gave way to
Tommy Organ who tossed the next 2.1 innings allowing an unearned run on four hits and a walk, while adding three strikeouts.
Ryan McMahon pitched the next 2.1 innings allowing two runs on three hits with a strikeout.
Jamie Cardwell worked 0.2 innings of scoreless relief before giving way to Incinelli.
Throughout the game, North Florida responded with at least one run after each inning that No. 29 Florida scored.
North Florida was the first team to score, plating three runs in the top of the third inning. Wielbruda led off the inning with a single to right field and moved into scoring position on a wild pitch. Weeks was hit by a pitch and a one-out walk to Olmstead loaded the bases.
Donnie Dewees followed with a single to center field, scoring two runs. The Osprey runners advanced 90 feet on a balk by the Gators and an RBI groundout gave UNF a 3-0 advantage.
Florida responded to tie the game in the bottom of the fourth inning. Back-to-back singles to start off the inning left the Gators with runners on the corners. UF used a sacrifice fly to left field to score the first run of the game for the home team. The Gators continued the inning with a double, leaving Florida with runners on second and third. A single plated two more runs and tied the score at 3-3.
The Ospreys responded in the fifth inning with a run to regain the lead. Marincov and Olmstead notched back-to-back singles. The Ospreys earned runners on the corners after a fielder's choice. P. Karmeris followed with a two-out RBI double to score Marincov from third.
In the bottom of the sixth inning, the Gators tied the score at 4-4. A fielding error by the Ospreys allowed a runner to reach base with one out. With two outs, Florida used a well-placed single to right center field to tie the game.
In the top of the seventh inning, North Florida regained the lead with a pair of runs. Weeks led off the inning with a triple to right center field. He came around to score on a Marincov double to left center field. Marincov advanced to third on a fly ball to deep center field. P. Karmeris delivered his second two-out RBI hit of the ball game, singling up the middle to score Marincov and put UNF in front 6-4.
The score remained 6-4 until the bottom of the ninth. Florida opened the inning with a single and a double for a pair of runners in scoring position. The Gators used a groundout to trim the deficit to 6-5 and a sacrifice fly to tie the game at 6-6 and force extra innings.
After scoring a run in the 10th inning, the Ospreys defense was able to stand strong and prevent a potential comeback by the Gators.
North Florida returns to action over the weekend with four games at Dusty Rhodes Field at Harmon Stadium. The Ospreys host Jacksonville State and Charleston Southern in a mini-tournament. North Florida opens the weekend with a game against JSU on Friday, Mar. 1 at 3:00 p.m., and follow with a game against CSU at 6:30 p.m. The weekend continues on Sunday as the Ospreys play the Gamecocks (1:00 p.m.) and Buccaneers (3:30 p.m.) once again. Jacksonville State and Charleston Southern square off against each other on Saturday afternoon.
