On the mound, starter
Tyler Moore earned his first victory of the season. The Preseason All-Atlantic Sun Conference pitcher worked 5.0 innings of scoreless baseball. He surrendered a pair of hits, but did not allow a runner past second base. Moore struck out six batters without issuing a walk. In addition, he posted a pair of 1-2-3 innings.
Moore was relieved by lefty
Tommy Organ. The senior hurler scattered three hits in 3.0 innings of relief. Organ surrendered back-to-back base hits to the first two batters he faced, but was able to work his way out of the jam without surrendering a run. He notched a strikeout without surrendering a walk. The southpaw retired the final five batters he faced in order before giving way to freshman
Corbin Olmstead.
Olmstead tossed the final inning of the night. The rookie loaded the bases with just one out, but used a game-ending double play to escape the jam and preserve the shutout.
Offensively, the Ospreys collected 10 hits. Junior
Ryan Roberson led the team with three hits, while seniors
Corey Bass and
Joe Wielbruda each added a pair of hits. Bass, Wielbruda, Olmstead and
Tyler Marincov each scored a run for the Ospreys, while
Alex Bacon drove in a pair. Marincov also added an RBI on the night. Bacon and newcomer
Kyle Brooks both finished the night with doubles for UNF.
North Florida was the first team to score, plating a run in the bottom of the third inning. Bass led off the inning with a single up the middle. Wielbruda grounded out to the pitcher, moving Bass to second base on the play.
Drew Weeks flew out to right field to move Bass to within 90 feet of home. Marincov plated the runner with an RBI single through the left side of the infield to put UNF ahead, 1-0.
The Ospreys extended their lead in the bottom of the fifth inning. Wielbruda singled to right center field to lead off the inning. With one out, Marincov walked to give North Florida a pair of base runners. With two outs, Olmstead reached base on a throwing error that allowed Wielbruda to score from second. With runners on first and third, Bacon doubled to left field to plate Marincov and Olmstead and give the Ospreys a 4-0 lead.
UNF worked out of a jam in the top of the sixth inning. Back-to-back base hits left the Mountaineers with runners on the corners and no outs. The next batter hit a ball back to the pitcher Organ who looked the runner back to third and was able to get the fielder's choice at second base for the first out. The southpaw struck out the next batter for the second out of the inning and used a fly ball to center field to leave West Virginia scoreless.
WVU threatened in the final inning of play. The Mountaineers used a leadoff walk and a single to place a pair of runners on base. The Ospreys used a fly ball to record the first out of the inning, but a single through the left side of the infield loaded the bases. With the bases loaded and one out, Olmstead induced a game-ending double play to
Paul Karmeris at third base. Karmeris stepped on third and threw over to first in time to double up the Mountaineers, preserving the shutout.
North Florida and West Virginia continue the series with a game on Saturday afternoon at 1:00 p.m. at Dusty Rhodes Field at Harmon Stadium.
