JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Trailing 6-5 heading into the bottom of the ninth, the University of North Florida baseball team used an RBI double from
Donnie Dewees and a walk-off single from
Joe Wielbruda to post a 7-6 victory over West Virginia. North Florida improves to 2-0 on the season and claimed the series with the Mountaineers.
Down in the bottom of the ninth inning, the Ospreys used a leadoff walk from
Alex Bacon to get things started.
Paul Karmeris advanced the runner into scoring position with a sacrifice bunt. Dewees entered the game to pinch hit and delivered a base hit that bounced over the WVU first baseman's head. The RBI double knotted the score at 6-6 and left the Ospreys with a runner on second base. A groundout moved Dwees to third base. The true freshman came into score the game-winning run as Wielbruda hit the first pitch he saw through the left side of the infield.
North Florida finished the game with a dozen hits and had four players with multiple hits on the afternoon. Wielbruda,
Drew Weeks,
Corbin Olmstead and Karmeris each had two hits on the day.
Ryan Roberson, Bacon and Dewees recorded the only extra base hits of the day, each doubling in the game. Roberson led the team with two runs scored, while five different players drove in runs.
On the mound, the Ospreys' pitching staff surrendered six runs on 12 hits.
Starting pitcher
Kyle Westwood worked 6.1 innings. The senior hurler scattered 10 hits on the afternoon without an extra base hit. Westwood surrendered five runs en route to the no decision. He issued a pair of walks while striking out six.
Spencer Herrmann earned the victory in the game. The sophomore surrendered an unearned run on two hits in 2.2 innings of work. The southpaw struck out three batters without issuing a walk.
West Virginia was the first team to score, plating a run in the top of the first inning. The leadoff batter Bobby Boyd led off the game with a single through the left side of the infield. He advanced to third after a one-out single by Ryan Tuntland. Matt Frazer drove home Boyd with an RBI single to put the Mountaineers in front 1-0.
North Florida responded with a pair of runs in the bottom of the inning. With one out, Weeks singled to left field. He advanced to second as Roberson drew a two-out walk. Olmstead singled to left field and advanced to second on a fielding error by the WVU left fielder. Weeks scored on the base hit, while Roberson crossed home plate courtesy of the error.
The Mountaineers tied the score in the top of the second inning. Billy Fleming led off the inning with a walk and advanced to second base on an Alan Filauro single. Fleming advanced to third on a deep fly ball to right field and came around to score on a fielder's choice.
With the score tied 2-2, the Ospreys regained the lead with two runs in the bottom of the second. Karmeris led off the inning with a single to left center.
Kyle Brooks reached on a fielder's choice and advanced to second as
Corey Bass drew a walk. Wielbruda singled to shallow center field to load the bases for UNF. With the bases loaded, North Florida benefited from a wild pitch by West Virginia. Brooks scored on the play to give the Ospreys a one-run lead. Weeks increased the UNF lead with a sacrifice fly to centerfield, putting the hosts up 4-2.
UNF added a run in the bottom of the third inning. Roberson led off the inning with a double down the right field line. Olmstead followed with a single to give North Florida runners on the corners. Karmeris scored the lead runner from third with a sacrifice fly to left field.
WVU chipped into the Ospreys' lead in the top of the fourth inning. Fleming and Filaruo recorded back-to-back singles to start the inning. With one out, the runners moved up a base on a groundout to third base. The Mountaineers benefited from a balk call against the Ospreys to score the lead runner and cut the UNF advantage to 5-3.
In the top of the fifth inning, West Virginia was able to plate a pair of runners and tie the score at 5-5. Three consecutive singles by Taylor Munden, Tuntland and Frazer scored a run and left the Mountaineers with a pair of runners on base. Westwood was able to strikeout the next batter, but an RBI single by Fleming knotted the score. Bass was able to throw out a runner for the second out and Westwood ended the inning with a strikeout.
In the eighth inning, the Mountaineers regained the lead. A throwing error by the Ospreys allowed Ryan McBroom to reach base safely. He advanced to second base on a sacrifice bunt. Herrmann, who entered the game in the seventh inning, struck out the next batter, but a wild pitch allowed McBroom to advance to third. WVU's Michael Constantini gave the visitors a 6-5 lead with an RBI single through the left side of the infield.
The Ospreys were unable to score in the bottom of the eighth inning, but managed to keep the Mountaineers off the scoreboard in the ninth inning, setting up the ninth inning heroics.
North Florida and West Virginia conclude the three-game series with a game on Sunday afternoon at 12:00 p.m. at Dusty Rhodes Field at Harmon Stadium.
