JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Poor hitting plagued University of North Florida volleyball in the Ospreys' 3-0 (25-21, 25-18, 25-11) loss to Kennesaw State on Friday for Senior Night at UNF Arena.
Anna Budinska tallied six kills, while
Abby Fesl made 11 assists.
Cari Whitmire had seven digs. The Ospreys had their lowest hitting percentage of the season (-.038).
Kelly Marcinek tallied 19 kills, while Sara Metroka had 32 assists. Toure Hopkins and Emily Bean notched 14 and 11 digs, respectively.
Trailing by one in the first set, the Ospreys saw Kennesaw State take advantage of an Osprey attack error and had a three-point run that resulted in Kennesaw State go up 15-11. UNF's deficit grew to as many as five before the Ospreys fought back. A block by
Morgan Van Alstine and
Carina Hoff brought UNF to within two as Kennesaw State held an 18-16 lead. Although the Owls were able to push their lead to four several times, UNF cut it in half, including at 23-21 on a kill from
Erin Edwards. However, Marcinek had back-to-back kills to end the first set.
UNF battled from a six-point deficit in the second set to cut Kennesaw State's lead down to four as a kill from
Britt Claessens made it 18-14. However, the Owls used an Osprey service error on the next point to go on a three-point run a build a seven-point lead. Kennesaw State pushed its advantage to eight before UNF trimmed it down to six, getting a Budinska service ace to make it 23-17. Kennesaw State went on to capture two of the set's final three points.
In the third set, UNF was unable to respond to the Owls' 11-point set-opening run. Another Kennesaw State run, this time four points, pushed the Owls' lead to 13, going up 17-4 on a Marcinek-Megan McGuinness block. UNF brought Kennesaw State's lead down to 11 twice in the remaining points, but Owls finished the match with a three-point run.
UNF plays its final match of the season at UNF Arena on Saturday when the Ospreys host Mercer. Match time is at 3 p.m.
