NASHVILLE, Tenn. –
Anna Budinska recorded her fifth-consecutive double-double, but University of North Florida volleyball fell 3-0 (25-18, 25-15, 25-23) at Lipscomb on Friday evening at Allen Arena.
"Lipscomb is a very good team," said head coach Steve Loeswick. "We did better in the third set and had an opportunity to extend the match, but were not able to capitalize. We have to put this evening behind us because we have another good team tomorrow in Northern Kentucky. We have to make sure we are ready from the first set to go."
Budinska made 16 kills and 12 digs on the night. In addition to it being her fifth-consecutive match with a double-double, it was also her 13th of the season.
Britt Claessens and
Abby Fesl each tallied 16 assists.
Jewell Dobson led Lipscomb with 14 kills. The nation's assists leader, Caitlin Dotson put up 39 assists. Bri McCombs made 17 digs.
Down by two in the first set, UNF saw Lipscomb use a four-point run to surge to a 16-10 lead. Lipscomb ultimately led by as many as eight, going up 22-14 on a Molly Spitznagle and Lauren Ford block. UNF attempted to cut into the Lady Bisons' lead and fended off set-point twice before a kill from Spitznagle won the set.
In the second set, UNF faced a hot-hitting Lipscomb team that registered a .400 hitting percentage. After a kill from
Saelina Dunn brought the Ospreys to within three points midway through the set, a Ford kill started a four-point spurt that put Lipscomb up 19-12. The Lady Bisons continued to pull away and scored five of the set's last six points in order to win the second set and go up 2-0 in the match.
The third set was a battle with 15 ties and eight lead changes. Down by one late, a Budinska kill was the first of three quick UNF points that gave the Ospreys a 21-19 advantage. After a Spitznagle kill ended the Ospreys' run, a kill from
Carina Hoff allowed UNF to regain a two-point lead. However, UNF saw Lipscomb go on a costly three-point run that lifted the Lady Bisons to a 23-22 lead. Although UNF tied it on the next point due to a Lipscomb service error, a Dobson kill and a Ford-Dobson block provided Lipscomb with the final two points it needed to win the match.
UNF returns to action on Saturday at Northern Kentucky. Match time is set for 3 p.m.
