DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – University of North Florida volleyball hit a solid .359 en route to a 3-0 (25-16, 25-15, 25-17) victory over Bethune-Cookman on Tuesday evening at Moore Gymnasium. It was the third time this season UNF's hit over .300 for the match.
"Other than our serving, we played a pretty good all-around game," said head coach Steve Loeswick. "We kept the ball off the floor and were efficient offensively. We were able to handle the first contact pretty well. It was nice to get some other people on the floor and experience. The more experience we get this young group, the better we'll be at the end of the year and we're excited with where we are going."
Prior to Tuesday night's match, UNF hit over .300 against both Mississippi Valley State (.307) and Northern Kentucky (.371).
Anna Budinska paced the Ospreys with a 13-kill, 14-dig double-double, while
Morgan Van Alstine hit .636 (seven kills, 11 total attempts and no errors).
Abby Fesl, who made five kills on six total attempts, put up 33 assists.
Delicia Pierre recorded a team-best seven kills for Bethune-Cookman. Alexas Thomas tallied 17 assists and Jennifer Jimenez had 11 digs.
The Ospreys led the first set from start to finish. After opening with a five-point run, UNF later used a four-point run to go up 12-3 on a
Carina Hoff kill. The Ospreys capitalized on multiple Bethune-Cookman attack errors while being consistent with their hits in order to build a 10-point 23-13 lead. A kill from
Carina Hoff ultimately ended the set and put UNF up 1-0 in the match.
UNF came out with a strong .471 hitting percentage for the second set. Several runs midway through the set propelled the Ospreys to the 10-point set victory. With UNF up by two, a Wildcat error was the first of four-straight Osprey points that resulted in a 12-6 UNF lead. The Ospreys increased their lead to 20-10 largely in part to a three-point run and another four-point run. Bethune-Cookman was only able to come to within eight as UNF cruised to set victory, with
Chelsie Ferguson getting the set-winning kill.
The third set was closer and it was not until near the end when UNF pulled away from Bethune-Cookman. Up 19-16, a Budinska kill sparked a four-point run as UNF held a 23-16 lead. After an Osprey service error, Budinska registered the final two points of the match, getting a kill and then an ace.
UNF returns to action on Friday for its first of three matches in four days. The Ospreys host USC Upstate at UNF Arena at 7 p.m.
