JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Home-opening weekend and the Radisson/North Florida Invitational ended with a pair of wins on Saturday for the University of North Florida volleyball team. The Ospreys swept Presbyterian 3-0 in their first match and then rallied to take a 3-2 thriller against Davidson at UNF Arena.

The Ospreys were the only team to go 3-0 at the Radisson/North Florida Invitational. Senior Carolyn Jenkins was selected as the tournament's MVP after tallying 43 kills in three matches and averaging 3.91 kills per set. Senior libero Nicole Baran (82 digs, 7.45 digs/set) and junior setter Britt Claessens (133 assists, 12.09 assists/set) were named All-Tournament along with Florida A&M's Karol Marquez and Yeisha Arcia, Presbyterian's Mary Trimpe and Davidson's Molly Crenshaw.

“This was a great weekend for us, especially with winning all three matches this weekend in front of our fans on our home court,” said head coach Steve Loeswick. “The girls played with great energy, which translated into great volleyball. It was another exciting day for our fans and we hope they enjoyed it.”

UNF came out strong against Presbyterian. A block in the first set by Dagnija Medina and Paige Pridgeon at 12-10 was the first of six-straight points that gave UNF an eight-point advantage. Presbyterian eventually used a six-point run to cut the Ospreys' lead down to a two-point, 21-19 advantage before a kill from Jenkins ultimately clinched the set for the Ospreys.

After a close start to the second set, UNF gradually pulled away and went up by seven when a Pridgeon kill made it 19-12. The Ospreys led by seven on three more occasions, including when a Presbyterian attacking error gave them the set point (25-18).

The third set was a battle back and forth. The largest lead was a three-point advantage that Presbyterian took twice, including at 20-17. However, UNF rallied and clinched the set and the match on a Medina and Marija Pantovich block.

Kelsey Smith had a career day against Presbyterian, making a career-high 18 digs and serving up a career-high tying three aces. Jenkins tallied 10 kills and was the only play with double-digit kills in the match, while Claessens put up 31 assists. Defensively, Baran's 25 digs was a match-high and led four Ospreys in double-digit digs – Baran, Smith, Pridgeon (17) and Cari Whitemire (10).

Rachel Hall had a team-high nine kills, while Ashtin Frank made 27 assists and Trimpe had 19 digs for Presbyterian.

UNF ended the weekend in a dramatic, come-from-behind fashion against Davidson.

“We did not start out well in either of the first or second sets, but the girls definitely fought for this win,” said Loeswick. “Davidson is a good team and we dug deep to pull out wins we needed in the final three sets.”

Anna Budinska and Pridgeon each had a double-double. Budinska had a 17-kill, 16-dig performance, while Pridgeon tallied 16 kills and 16 digs. Jenkins (17 kills) and Pantovic (10 kills) had double-digit kills.

Meanwhile, Claessens put up a career-high 61 assists, making it the first time she's eclipsed the 60-assists plateau.

Defensively, Baran notched her second 30+ dig match of the season and the third of her career. Baran made a team-best 33 digs. Whitmire also logged a 12-dig night.

Caroline Brown led Davidson with a 19-kill, 21-dig double-double. Ariel Ley made 48 assists, while Molly Crenshaw had a match-high 36 digs.

UNF found itself trailing by 10 early in the first set. The Ospreys trimmed the Wildcats' lead down to five on a Davidson attacking error at 16-11. The five-point margin would be the closest UNF could get to Davidson in the set as the Wildcats eventually won 25-18.

Davidson went on a six-point run midway through the second set to take an 18-12 lead. However, UNF fought back and came to within two when a Budinska kill made it 21-19 in favor of Davidson. The Wildcats eventually built up a four-point lead. Facing set point, a kill from Budinska kept the Ospreys alive, but Davidson closed out the set on the next point with a kill by Tindall Sewell.

Both the third and fourth sets were played to close finishes. UNF and Davidson battle back and forth in the third set. The Wildcats went up by two late in the set, taking a 21-19 advantage on a Taylor Pisel kill. However, a kill from Budinska sparked a quick three-point spurt that allowed UNF to go ahead 22-21. Both teams battled over the next few points until a Jenkins kill clinched the third set 25-23 for the Ospreys.

UNF rallied in the fourth set after being down 18-15. A Medina-Claessens block capped a four-point run that put the Ospreys up 19-18. Each team had late runs in the set's final points, but a critical kill by Budinska at match point sealed the set win for UNF and force a decisive fifth set.

UNF controlled the final set from start to finish en route to winning the set by 10 points. The Ospreys capitalized on seven attacking errors by the Wildcats and also won six of the set's last seven points.

The Ospreys return to action on Tuesday with a mid-week match at Bethune-Cookman. Match time is set for 7 p.m.
