ATHENS, Ga. -- The University of North Florida men's tennis team advanced en route to a solid opening day at the 2012 Southern Intercollegiate Championships on the campus of the University of Georgia.
Senior
Moritz Buerchner, who earned a top-16 seed in the Division I bracket, led the way for the Ospreys, grabbing a win in his first-round game, 6-3, 6-3 over Daniel Regan of Armstrong Atlantic State. Senior
Daniel Sotomarino, who was drawn against Yannick Maden of Clemson, seeded fifth in the Division I bracket, fell in his opening match, 6-2, 6-1.
In the Division II singles bracket, senior
Pedro Davisson advanced to the second round with a 6-4, 6-4 victory over Oliver Webb of Georgia Southern, while freshman
Mark Hamill joined him with a 6-2, 6-3 win over Jorge Azuero of Liberty. Sophomore
Timo Kranz grabbed a hard-fought 3-6, 6-2, 6-2 victory over Gabriel Echeverry of Florida Gulf Coast in his out match, before topping Arsav Mohanty of Mercer, 6-0, 6-2, to earn a spot in tomorrow's second round.
Senior
Julien Belair knocked off Alexander Pena of Kennesaw State, 6-4, 6-3 to book his ticket to the second round. Junior Fernando Costa took down Ethan Wilkinson of Mississippi State in his out match, 7-6(2), 6-2, before falling to Pedro Scocuglia of Armstrong Atlantic State, 6-4, 6-1.
Senior
Leonardo Nahar moved into the second round after beating Richard Cassagrande of Furman, 6-3, 2-6, 6-1, while freshman
Bernardo Craveiro fell to Tobi Menhofer of Kennesaw State, 6-2, 6-3 and junior Beauregard Treys was knocked off by Zach Wilder of Mississippi. Sophomore
Norbert Nemcsek beat Victor Dias of Mercer, 6-3, 7-5, in his out match, before taking down Roger Ordeig of East Tennessee State, 7-6(5), 6-1, to move on to the second round.
On the doubles side, Sotomarino and Nemcsek won their Division I out match, 8-5, over David Salazar and Oliver Strecker of Lipscomb.
The Ospreys went 2-1 in their Division II doubles matches. Treys and Hamill won their first career match together, taking down Josiah Boda and Sergio Mourelo of Liberty, 8-2. Belair and Buerchner grabbed an 8-4 victory over Tianyu Bao and Lance Lvovsky of Florida Gulf Coast, while Craveiro and Kranz fell 8-4 to Richard Cassagrande and Alex Christ of Furman.
Costa and Davisson are paired for a first-round game against Albert Codina Sala and Rafael Racy of Georgia Southern, but the match was pushed to Saturday due to time constraints.
Tomorrow's matches will begin at 8 a.m.
