CHARLESTON, S.C. – Senior
Carolyn Jenkins had 16 kills and hit .538 against Memphis on Saturday morning, but it was not enough as the University of North Florida volleyball team dropped a 3-0 match to Memphis at the Courtyard Charleston North Classic.
“We didn't bring quite the same energy as last night and as a result, we let some points slip away,” said head coach Steve Loeswick. “We did some good things, but not enough to finish the first two sets. However, we're going to keep working to get better.”
Jenkins' 16 kills were a match-high and followed up her 19-kill performance against tournament host College of Charleston on Friday night. Defensively,
Nicole Baran made a team-best 14 digs.
Altrese Hawkins led Memphis with a 13-kill, 10-dig double-double. The Tigers also got double-digit kills from Maja Kostic (12) and Marija Javanovic (11).
UNF attempted to pull away midway through the first set, but Memphis erased the Ospreys' four-point lead and the teams battled over the set's final points. The Tigers gained a late two-point lead before a kill by Jenkins and a Memphis attack error tied the set at 23-all. Memphis got set's next point, but another Jenkins kill kept UNF alive. However, Memphis grabbed the next two points to take the set.
The second set was similar to the first with the Ospreys' up by four and Memphis cutting back on UNF's lead. The Tigers eventually tied the set at 21-21. The two teams fought back-and-forth for the set's last points. Facing set point twice, Jenkins tied the set at 24-24 and 25-25 with a pair of kills. The set's final two points slipped away from the Ospreys as Memphis went up 2-0 in the match.
UNF and Memphis each used runs to stay close to each other midway through the third set. The Ospreys' largest run came as
Marija Pantovic sparked a five-point spurt that put UNF ahead 14-13. However, a late Tiger run proved to be costly as Memphis got five of the set's last six points.
The Ospreys have one more match on Saturday with an exhibition against the Slovenian Junior National Team set for 4:30 p.m.
