Postgame Interview (Andrew Karmeris)
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The University of North Florida baseball team scored 10 runs on 13 hits to upset the No. 1 Florida Gators, 10-5, on Tuesday night at Dusty Rhodes Field at Harmon Stadium in front of a crowd of 2,144. With the win the Ospreys (18-13) tie the all-time series at 5-5 and improve to 3-0 over the Gators (24-5) in the city of Jacksonville. North Florida is the first unranked team to defeat Florida this season.
Offensively, the Ospreys scored 10 runs on 13 hits. The 10 runs scored are the most surrendered by the Gators this season while the 13 hits recorded marked the fourth most allowed by UF.
Five different North Florida players recorded multiple hits on the night.
Michael Wesner led all Ospreys with three hits on the night, while
Alex Bacon,
Chris Carter,
T.J. Gavlik and
Andrew Karmeris each had two hits apiece. A. Karmeris made his hits count, recording a home run and a double on the night. Gavlik hit his first triple of the season in the win. Bacon and
Tyler Marincov each boasted doubles to give UNF five extra base hits on the evening. Bacon, A. Karmeris and Wesner each tied for the team lead with two runs scored each while Gavlik drove in a career-best three runs on the night.
On the mound, the Ospreys used five pitchers.
Evan Stermer earned his first start for the Ospreys. The senior allowed one unearned run in 1.0 innings surrendering just a pair of base hits.
Chandler Jagodzinski earned his first victory of the season, tossing 2.0 innings of scoreless relief. The sidewinder allowed just one hit and struck out a batter.
Spencer Herrmann toed the rubber for the next 1.2 innings. The freshman allowed a pair of unearned runs on three hits and a walk. He gave way to
Trey Ferrano who also worked 1.2 innings. Ferrano was charged with one run on two hits and a walk.
Jamie Cardwell tossed the final 2.2 innings, allowing one unearned run on a pair of hits and two walks. The redshirt freshman registered a career-high two strikeouts on the night and worked a 1-2-3 inning in the ninth to secure the win.
Florida was the first team to score, plating a runner in the top of the first inning. The top ranked team in the country opened up the game with back-to-back singles. The Gators scored a run on a fielding error by the Ospreys and lead 1-0 early.
North Florida responded with a big four-run second inning. Marincov led off the inning with a double to right center field. Wesner followed with a single to give UNF runners on the corners. Bacon cleared the bases with a two-RBI double to left center field, giving the Ospreys the lead. Carter followed with a single to continue the inning. With runners on the corners,
Corey Bass reached base on a fielder's choice. The Gators tried to retire Carter at second base, but a throwing error allowed Carter to reach base safely and advance to third. Bacon came around to score on the play. Gavlik followed with an RBI single to score Carter and give the Ospreys a 4-1 advantage. The four runs in the inning tied for the most runs scored in an inning against the Gators.
In the third inning, the Ospreys increased their lead to four runs. Wesner singled to right field with one out, advancing to second on a fielding error. With two outs, Carter scored Wesner with an RBI single up the middle.
UNF used a home run by A. Karmeris in the bottom of the fourth inning to push their lead to 6-1. The home run was A. Karmeris' third of the season and the 26th of his career.
The No. 1 Gators chipped into the Ospreys lead with a pair of runs in the top of the fifth inning. The leadoff batter reached base on a fielding error and advanced to second as the next batter drew a walk. Florida bunted for a single to load the bases. The Ospreys turned a double play for the first two outs of the inning, but the Gators scored a run on the play. UF continued the inning with an RBI single to center field, cutting the UNF advantage to 6-3. The Ospreys used a ground out to end the inning.
North Florida responded with a run in the bottom of the fifth. Bacon singled to center field with one out and moved to second as Carter drew a four-pitch walk. Bass walked to load the bases and Gavlik scored Bacon from third with an RBI ground out.
A. Karmeris led off the sixth inning with a double to left field and moved to third on a ground ball by his brother P. Karmeris. The elder Karmeris came around to score on a wild pitch by Florida to give North Florida a 8-3 edge.
In the top of the seventh inning, the Gators manufactured a run to trim the deficit. The leadoff runner singled to start the inning and moved to third on a bloop double just inside the foul line. With runners on second and third, Florida used a sacrifice fly to plate the lead runner, but the Ospreys did not allow another run in the inning as a pick off and a fly ball out ended the inning.
The Ospreys notched a pair of runs in the bottom of the seventh inning. With one out, Bass walked to start things for UNF. He came around to score as Gavlik tripled off of the wall in right center field. Gavlik scored on a fielding error by the Gators, giving UNF a 10-4 advantage.
UF scored a run in the top of the eighth inning. With two outs, the Gators used a single combined with a throwing error to place a runner in scoring position. A double scored the runner, but a strikeout ended the inning. Cardwell shut the door on a potential comeback by Florida as the redshirt freshman set the Gators down in order in the bottom of the ninth, preserving the 10-5 victory.
North Florida returns to action this weekend as the Ospreys travel to Johnson City, Tennessee for a three-game series with East Tennessee State. The series opens on Thursday, April 5 at 3:05 p.m. Live stats and in-game Tweets (@UNFOspreys) will be available for each game.
