A-SUN CHAMPS! Women's Tennis Downs ETSU 4-2 For Second Conference Title in Three Years

BRISTOL, Tenn.Simona Weymar's three-set win at No. 5 singles was the final point top-seeded University of North Florida women's tennis team needed to defeat No. 2 seed ETSU 4-2 to claim the 2012 Atlantic Sun Women's Tennis Championship in a marathon match that lasted 5 hours and 30 minutes at the Bristol Racquet Club. It is the Ospreys' second conference title after becoming eligible for the Atlantic Sun postseason three seasons ago.
 
With the win, UNF completed a perfect season against all Atlantic Sun opponents. The Ospreys went 9-0 in conference play during the regular season and then post wins against both Stetson and ETSU in the conference tournament.
 
UNF got out to a 1-0 lead after the doubles competition. Rebeca Pereira and Weymar powered their way to an 8-1 win at No. 2 doubles against Karina Kedzo and Diana Navrostska. At No. 1 doubles, No. 66 Aline Berkenbrock and Lorena Aviles clinched the doubles point for the Ospreys with an 8-6 win over Paula Jaime and Marine Wieliczko.
 
The Ospreys won the first two points in the singles competition in order to go up 3-0. Danielle Day took a 6-2, 6-4 win against Wieliczko at No. 3 singles to get the team's first singles point. Aviles' 6-4, 6-2 win over Giulia Andreazza on the No. 2 court put the Ospreys up by three.
 
ETSU battled back for the match's next two points to make it a one-point match. Jaime defeated Berkenbrock 6-4, 6-2 at No. 1 singles. Kedzo hung on for a 6-4, 4-6, 6-0 win against Melanie Aguirre at No. 4 singles.
 
With UNF up 3-2, Weymar fought her way to a match-clinching victory over Navrostska. Weymar won the first set 6-4, but Navrostska came back for a 6-4 win in the second set to force a deciding third set. Weymar cruised to a 6-1 win in the final set, giving the Ospreys the championship point.
 
Following the conclusion of the championship match, the All-Tournament Team was announced. Day was named the Atlantic Sun Tournament MVP. She was joined by Aviles, Berkenbrock and Weymar.
