Baseball Claims Series Behind Moore’s Complete Game

Boxscore

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – For the second consecutive day, the University of North Florida baseball team received a complete game pitching performance en route to a 6-1 victory over Lipscomb on Sunday afternoon at Dusty Rhodes Field at Harmon Stadium. Tyler Moore recorded his first complete game of the season, recording a career-high 11 strikeouts, helping the Ospreys claim the Atlantic Sun Conference series.

Moore surrendered four hits during his 9.0 innings pitched. The sophomore allowed one unearned run and issued one walk. Moore struck out a career high 11 batters on the day. The right-hander retired the first 15 batters he faced with seven strikeouts through the first five innings. He had six 1-2-3 innings and faced four batters over the minimum.

The North Florida starting pitchers tossed 25.1 innings over the course of the weekend, allowing just one earned run. The trio of Michael Renner, Kyle Westwood and Moore combined for 25 strikeouts with relievers Jamie Cardwell and Chandler Jagodzinski each adding a K to give UNF 9.0 strikeouts per game as a pitching staff.

Offensively, the Ospreys recorded eight hits on the day including four extra base hits. Alex Bacon, Joe Iorio and Ryan Roberson each notched two hits apiece during the game. Iorio provided the most offensive punch, finishing the game 2-for-3 with a home run and a double. Bacon notched a pair of doubles in the game. Roberson led the team with three RBI, while Iorio added a pair of runs batted in. Six different Osprey players scored a run in the game.

North Florida was the first team to score, plating three runs in the bottom of the second inning. With two outs, Bacon doubled to right field for the Ospreys' first hit of the game. Roberson drove home Bacon with an RBI single to right center field. Iorio put UNF in front 3-0 with a two-run home run to left field. The home run was the second of the season for the sophomore.

Lipscomb cut the deficit to 3-1 with an unearned run in the top of the sixth inning. An error on a dropped foul ball continued the at bat of the leadoff hitter. The batter singled and advanced to second on a four-pitch walk. Following an out, the Bisons used a single to right field to score the lead runner. The trail runner was thrown out at third base trying to move to within 90 feet of home. Moore induced a fly ball out to end the inning.

The Ospreys added three insurance runs in the bottom of the eighth inning. Paul Karmeris drew a walk to lead off the inning, which prompted a pitching change by the Bisons. Michael Wesner advanced the runner with a sacrifice bunt. Tyler Marincov hit a ball to the shortstop and Lipscomb threw the ball to third base to try to erase P. Karmeris. The Bisons were unable to apply the tag to the sliding Karmeris, leaving the Ospreys with runners on the corners. Andrew Karmeris singled through the left side of the infield to score his younger brother from third. The two runners on base advanced 90 feet closer to home on a groundout. Roberson delivered a two-out two-RBI single to increase the Ospreys' advantage to 6-1, a lead UNF would not relinquish.

North Florida continues its homestand with a non-conference game against Florida A&M on Tuesday night at Harmon Stadium. Live stats, live audio, ASun.TV and in-game Tweets (@UNFOspreys) will be available for the game.
