JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The University of North Florida baseball team scored 13 runs on 14 hits en route to a 13-1 midweek victory over Florida A&M on Tuesday night at Dusty Rhodes Field at Harmon Stadium. The Ospreys used an 8-run third inning to take control of the game, improving to 14-6 at home.
UNF recorded 14 hits on the night, including three extra base hits. Nine batters in the lineup recorded hits on the night with four batters notching multiple hits in the game.
T.J. Gavlik led all Ospreys with three hits and three RBI on the night.
Alex Bacon,
Corey Bass and
Andrew Karmeris each had a pair of hits in the game. Bacon,
Ryan Roberson and
Spencer Herrmann each recorded doubles on the night.
Garrick Ferguson led all players with four runs in the game, followed by Gavlik who scored twice. Herrmann and Roberson each added two RBI apiece.
On the mound, the Ospreys used four pitchers.
Tommy Organ earned the victory in a controlled start. The southpaw scattered seven hits over 4.0 innings of work, allowing one run. Organ struck out six batters without issuing a walk.
Evan Incinelli threw 3.0 scoreless innings of work. He did not allow a run or a hit, striking out his first collegiate batter.
Ryan McMahon and
Spencer Brown each tossed a scoreless inning apiece to close out the game for the Ospreys.
Florida A&M was the first team to score, manufacturing a run in the top of the second inning. The leadoff batter doubled to right center field to start the inning for the Rattlers. The Ospreys were able to eliminate the runner on a fielder's choice, leaving a runner on first base. The next batter singled through the right side of the infield to give FAMU runners on the corners. Florida A&M successfully executed a safety squeeze to score the lead runner and give the visitors a 1-0 lead.
North Florida broke the game open with eight runs in the bottom of the third. Ferguson led off the inning with a bunt single to third base.
Joe Iorio followed with a walk. With one out, Bacon singled to left center field, scoring Ferguson from third and tying the game.
Michael Wesner delivered an RBI single up the middle to give the Ospreys a lead they would not relinquish. With two outs,
Tyler Marincov drew a four-pitch walk and A. Karmeris singled through the left side of the infield, scoring Wesner on the play. An error on the play advanced Marincov and A. Karmeris both into scoring position. Roberson doubled to left field to score the two runners. Bass, the ninth batter of the inning, singled up the middle to score Roberson. Ferguson and Iorio each walked in their second plate appearance of the inning. Gavlik delivered a two-RBI single to give UNF an 8-1 advantage.
The Ospreys added a run in the bottom of the fifth inning. Gavlik singled with two outs and Herrmann and
Bryan Mathews each walked to load the bases.
Dillon Ennis scored Gavlik from third with a RBI walk.
In the sixth inning, UNF added three more runs on four base hits.
Evan Stermer, Bass, Gavlik and Herrmann each had hits in the inning. Herrmann's two-RBI double highlighted the inning.
UNF scored the final run of the game in the bottom of the eighth inning. The Ospreys scored a run on no hits and an error by FAMU. With two outs, Ferguson advanced to third on a three-base error by the Rattlers. He came around to score on a sacrifice fly by Iorio to give the Ospreys its final margin of victory, 13-1.
