TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The University of North Florida baseball team defeated Florida A&M, 8-3, in a midweek game at Moore-Kittles Field in Tallahassee, Fla. on Wednesday night. The Ospreys improved to 21-15 on the season, while the Rattlers dropped to 6-32.
North Florida scored eight runs on 10 hits on the night.
Andrew Karmeris paced the Osprey offensive attack with four hits. The senior also scored a pair of runs and drove in two RBI.
Michael Wesner added a pair of hits, while scoring two runs.
Tyler Marincov boasted the only extra base hit of the night by either team with a double in the fifth inning.
On the mound,
Spencer Herrmann earned his second collegiate start. The freshman worked 4.2 innings allowing three runs on a pair of hits. He struck out five batters, but surrendered four walks. Herrmann gave way to
Nick Allbritton who picked up the win, tossing 3.1 innings of scoreless relief. The junior college transfer allowed a pair of base hits and three walks. Allbritton struck out two batters on the night.
Trey Ferrano closed out the ninth inning for the Ospreys. Ferrano did not allow a hit with a pair of strikeouts to his credit.
North Florida was the first team to score, manufacturing a run in the top of the first inning. With one out, A. Karmeris singled through the left side of the infield to get things started for the Ospreys. Wesner followed with a single to shallow center field. Marincov drew a four-pitch walk to load the bases. North Florida was able to take the early 1-0 lead thanks to a wild pitch by the Rattlers scoring A. Karmeris from third, taking a 1-0 lead.
The Ospreys added two runs in the top of the second inning to increase their lead to 3-0.
Paul Karmeris was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning. He stole second to move into scoring position.
Garrick Ferguson followed with a walk.
Joe Iorio advanced both runners into scoring position with a sacrifice bunt.
T.J. Gavlik laced a RBI single to short to score P. Karmeris from third and leave runners on the corners. A. Karmeris followed with a chopper over the third baseman's head. Ferguson scored on the play to put the Ospreys in front by three.
FAMU cut into UNF's lead with a run in the bottom of the third inning. Herrmann struck out the first batter of the inning, but the next batter singled to center field. He advanced to second as the next batter in the order walked. A sacrifice bunt advanced both runners into scoring position. Florida A&M used a single to center field to score the lead runner. Herrmann ended the Rattlers' rally with a strikeout to end the inning, leaving the score 3-1.
UNF added an insurance run in the top of the fifth inning. With two outs, Wesner singled through the left side of the infield. Marincov followed with a double over the right fielder's head, allowing Wesner to score from first. An error earlier in the inning made the run unearned, but the Ospreys led 4-1 at the halfway point.
Florida A&M cut the North Florida lead to just one with a pair of runs in the bottom of the fifth inning. With one out, FAMU used a walk and a sacrifice bunt to move a runner into scoring position. The runner advanced to within 90 feet of home on a wild pitch. The next batter walked on four straight pitches to give the hosts runners on the corners. The lead runner came into score on a wild pitch that rolled to the backstop and allowed the trail runner to advance all the way to third. The Rattlers scored their second run of the inning with a hot shot base hit to first base. A line drive to shortstop ended the inning with the Ospreys leading 4-3.
North Florida responded with a run in the top of the seventh inning. With one out, Gavlik walked on four pitches and advanced to second on a wild pitch. A. Karmeris drove home Gavlik with an RBI single up the middle to give the Ospreys a 5-3 advantage.
The Ospreys pushed the lead to five with three runs in the top of the ninth inning. With one out, A. Karmeris laced a single to third base. The Ospreys benefited from a fielding error by the Rattlers to give UNF runners on the corners. Wesner, the runner on first base, stole second base to give the Ospreys a pair of runners in scoring position. With two outs, a second error of the inning allowed A. Karmeris to score easily from third base, advancing Wesner to third and leaving
Alex Bacon on first.
Dillon Ennis followed with a RBI single to left field. The final run of the inning scored on a failed pick-off attempt by FAMU, providing the final margin of victory, 8-3.
