JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – For the second-consecutive day, University of North Florida women's tennis held its opponent scoreless, this time sweeping cross-town rival Jacksonville 7-0 in an Atlantic Sun match held Monday afternoon at the Keith Watson Family Tennis Complex.
The match was originally scheduled for Saturday, but was re-scheduled to Monday after storms rolled through the River City on Saturday afternoon.
With the win, the Ospreys capture another barrel point in the SunTrust River City Rumble and hold a 10-3 lead over the Dolphins. The women's tennis point was the second point UNF got on Monday as UNF's men's tennis team secured a point earlier in the day with their win over the Dolphins.
UNF swept all three doubles matches to start the day.
Aline Berkenbrock and
Lorena Aviles cruised to an 8-3 win over Aline Staudt and Natalia Melibeu at No. 1 doubles.
Simona Weymar and
Rebeca Pereira held off Djessika Bezerra and Harjit Gosal for an 8-6 No. 2 victory.
Danielle Day and
Melanie Aguirre blanked Gabriela Bartos and Veronique Spencer 8-0 in a quick No. 3 doubles match.
All of UNF's singles wins came in two sets with the second set score for five of the six singles matches being 6-1. Berkenbrock downed Staudt 6-2, 6-2 at No. 1 singles, while Aviles cruised to a 6-0, 6-1 No. 2 singles win against Bartos. Day powered her way to a 6-1, 6-1 win over Melibeu at No. 3 singles and Weymar took a 6-2, 6-1 match against Bezerra at No. 4. At No. 5 singles,
Marina Cunningham battled to a 7-5 first set win over Spencer and the coasted to a 6-1 second set victory. Pereira added a 6-2, 6-1 win at No. 6 singles against Gosal.
UNF continues with conference play on Thursday when the Ospreys travel to Florida Gulf Coast for a match at Noon.
