JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – University of North Florida women's tennis picked up its first sweep of the season, blanking Troy 7-0 on Saturday afternoon at the UNF Tennis Complex.
“I'm extremely proud of the determination the girls have had for our last two matches,” said head coach Audra Cohen. “Today, every player stepped up and beat a solid team. Matches like this could easily go 4-3 if we didn't have the focus and determination that we had today. We have a tough match on Monday at Georgia State and are looking forward to starting conference play next weekend.”
The Ospreys got wins at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles in order to secure that point. Simon Weymar and
Rebeca Pereira posted an 8-2 win over Candela Munoz Giron and Samya El Hsissen at No. 2. The No. 3 doubles team of Melanie Aguierre and
Danielle Day went 8-3 against Olfa Dhaoui and Rosaura Ramirez-Vega. Meanwhile, No. 1 doubles was a close match, but
Aline Berkenbrock and
Lorena Aviles fell 8-7 (6) to Karoline Grymel and Lyubov Dorofeeva.
UNF won all six of the singles matches. Berkenbrock pulled out a 1-6, 6-0, 6-2 victory over Grymel at No. 1 singles, while Aviles had a 6-4, 6-0 win over Dorofeeva at No. 2. Day downed Dhaoui 6-4, 6-4 at No. 3 and Aguirre topped Munoz Giron 6-1, 6-3 at No. 4. At the No. 5 slot, Weymar went 6-4, 6-0 over El Hsissen.
Marina Cunningham added a 6-0, 6-2 win against Ramirez-Vega at No. 6.
UNF takes to the road for its next match, traveling to Atlanta to face Georgia State on Monday. Match time is set for 11 a.m.
