JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – University of North Florida volleyball posted its third sweep in four matches on Saturday with a 3-0 (25-18, 25-16, 25-23) sweep over cross-town rival Jacksonville at UNF Arena in the season's second SunTrust River City Rumble.
With the win, the Ospreys clinched a berth in the 2012 Atlantic Sun Tournament, picked up another barrel point in the SunTrust River City Rumble and swept the season series with the Dolphins.
“We played a very clean game in the first two sets and then served aggressively in the third set,” said head coach Steve Loeswick “I am happy with the composure that we played with in the third set so that we could get the win over our rival in three sets and secure another barrel point.
“At the beginning of the year, our goal was to put ourselves in a position to compete for the Atlantic Sun Championship,” continued Loeswick. “I hope that we continue to play at a high level for the next couple of weeks.”
Both
Paige Pridgeon and
Dagnija Medina had huge performances. Pridgeon notched an 18-kill, 11-dig double-double, while hitting .517. Medina made 11 kills on 23 attacks and hit .478.
Britt Claessens put up 39 assists, while
Nicole Baran added 14 digs.
Sammie Strausbaugh led Jacksonville with seven kills, while Kendall Courtney had a 20-assist, 14-dig double-double.
The Ospreys started out with a powerful first set and hit .387. Up by one, the Ospreys used a three-point run to take a 14-10 lead. The Dolphins cut into UNF's lead and came to within two, but a kill from Pridgeon sparked a four-point run to put UNF up 21-15. The Ospreys went on to win the set on a block by
Anna Budinska and
Carolyn Jenkins.
UNF dominated the second set and never allowed Jacksonville to take a lead. An early six-point run that included three Pridgeon aces distanced the Ospreys from Jacksonville. UNF went up 7-1 on Pridgeon's third ace of the run. After Jacksonville eventually cut UNF's lead down to four, the Ospreys outscored Jacksonville 9-1 in order to go up 19-7 on an ace by Baran. Jacksonville was able to close the gap some, but a kill from Pridgeon was the set-winner and put UNF up 2-0 in the match.
The third set was a close one between the two teams with 13 ties, including one late at 21-21. UNF capitalized on a Dolphin attacking error and a
Marija Pantovic service ace to break the tie and go up by two. Points went back and forth between UNF and Jacksonville until Jenkins recorded the match-winning kill.
UNF returns to action next weekend when the Ospreys close out the regular season with a pair of home matches. The Ospreys kick off the weekend against ETSU on Friday night at UNF Arena. Match time is set for 7 p.m.
