Men’s Soccer Drops Final Match to JU

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The University of North Florida men's soccer team fell to crosstown rival Jacksonville, 5-1, on Saturday night at Hodges Stadium in front of a record-crowd of 1,217. The match served as Senior Night and prior to the match the Ospreys three seniors – Greg Crowell, Shane Donovan and Brad Sienkiewicz – were all honored.
North Florida finished the night with one goal on 14 shots, including five shots on goal. Max McDaniel scored the lone goal for the Ospreys with an assist to Teddy Mulamba. Four different players finished the night with multiple shots, led by Mulamba who notched three shots. McDaniel, Casey Caronis and Mauricio Valderruten each took a pair of shots in the match. Both of Valderruten's shots were on goal.
Defensively, Sienkiewicz worked all 90 minutes at goal for the Ospreys. The transfer recorded six saves on the night, but surrendered five goals in the loss. Sienkiewicz finished the season with 70 saves in 11 matches (6.4 saves/match).
Jacksonville struck first with a goal in the 15th minute. Matheus Saroli sent a through ball up the middle to Nick Rodriguez. Rodriguez took two touches and shot from 12 yards out to the far left post, putting the visitors up 1-0 early.
The Dolphins added a goal in the 31st minute to take a 2-0 advantage before halftime. Saroli controlled a pass on the right side and dribbled twice before sending a 25 yard shot to the near post for the goal.
The two teams entered intermission with the visitors in front 2-0. Jacksonville held a slight advantage in shots in the first half, tallying nine shots compared to North Florida's six shots. The Ospreys notched three corner kicks compared to just one by the Dolphins. Both teams posted a pair of saves in the first half.
In the second half, the Ospreys cut the deficit in half with a goal by McDaniel. The freshman sent a long pass to Mulamba on the left side who one-touch pass back to McDaniel who volleyed the ball from six yards out for the goal. McDaniel's third goal of the season trimmed the JU lead to 2-1 in the 51st minute.
The match turned in the 59th minute as the Ospreys were whistled for a foul in the box allowing the Dolphins to take a penalty kick. Saroli converted the PK to put the visitors ahead 3-1.
Jacksonville added insurance goals in the 74th and 81st minutes of the match. Rene Reyes dripped up the right side into the middle and shot the ball from 25-yards out for the goal. The final goal of the match saw Gavin Craig dribble into area from the right side and send a low short cross to Roshoir Elliott who finished from six yards out.
North Florida finished the season 4-13-0 overall and 1-6-0 in the Atlantic Sun Conference. The Ospreys quadrupled their win total from a year before and won their first A-Sun match in two seasons. UNF led the league in attendance, averaging 539 fans per match.
