KENNESAW, Ga. – Powerful first and third sets propelled the University of North Florida volleyball team to a 3-0 (25-17, 25-21, 25-17) sweep of Kennesaw State in a critical Atlantic Sun match on Friday night at the KSU Convocation Center.
“We did a very nice job of staying in control tonight, fulfilling our game plan and staying in tendencies tonight,” said head coach Steve Loeswick. “We have another challenging match tomorrow at Mercer and are looking forward to it.”
As a team, the Ospreys hit .436 in the first set and then capped the match with a .381 hitting percentage in the final set.
Carolyn Jenkins and
Dagnija Medina led the Ospreys' offense with double-digit kills and impressive hitting. Jenkins had a match-high 13 kills and hit .370 and added to UNF's defense with five blocks. Medina recorded a .455 hitting percentage and 12 kills.
Paige Pridgeon added an 11-kill, 11-dig double-double.
Britt Claessens put up 44 assists, while Baran totaled 14 digs.
Turea Jones led Kennesaw State with 11 kills. Sara Metroka recorded 27 assists and Camile Pedraza dug 20 balls.
Both teams started out with solid hitting with UNF going .436 and Kennesaw State at a .308. The Ospreys put together multiple runs throughout the set to pull away from the Owls. UNF led by as many as eight during the set and gained its first eight-point advantage when a
Marija Pantovic kill made it 20-12. Although Kennesaw State eventually tried to cut into UNF's lead late and pulled to within five, UNF rattled of three-straight kills to win the set and go up 1-0 in the match.
UNF hung on to take a close second set. After being up by as many as six, the Ospreys saw Kennesaw State come back to even the set at 18-18. The two teams battled over the set's next few points. However, with UNF up 22-21, a critical block by Claessens and Jenkins started yet another set-ending three-point run and the Ospreys took a 2-0 match lead.
The Ospreys dominated the third set and led by as much as 10. A block by Jenkins and Pantovic lifted UNF to a 21-11 advantage. Although the Owls attempted to chip away at UNF's led, the Ospreys captured four of the set's final six points and took the match-winner on an
Anna Budinska kill.
UNF returns to action at Mercer on Saturday. Match time is set for 3 p.m., from Hawkins Arena.
