JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – University of North Florida volleyball opened a challenging stretch of Atlantic Sun matches with a 3-1 (25-17, 16-25, 25-21, 25-14) victory over Lipscomb Friday night at UNF Arena. It is the first time since 2006 in which UNF has defeated the Lady Bisons.
Dagnija Medina and
Carolyn Jenkins each hit over .400 for the match to help power the Ospreys offense. Medina hit .476, while Jenkins tallied a .417 hitting percentage. Medina made 13 kills and Jenkins and
Paige Pridgeon each recorded 12.
Defensively,
Nicole Baran led UNF with 22 digs. But a trio of Ospreys –
Britt Claessens,
Kelsey Smith and
Cari Whitmire – each dug 12 balls to help lead the UNF defense. Claessens also added 47 assists to her 12 digs in order to notch the match's only double-double.
Jewell Dobson and Kaycee Green each had a team-high 10 kills for Lipscomb.
UNF began to pull away from Lipscomb midway through the first set behind to big blocks. Up by three, a block by Jenkins and
Anna Budinska and then a Jenkins-Pridgeon block were the start three-straight points. The Ospreys later added a four-point run and went up by eight on a Medina kill. UNF ultimately capitalized on a Lipscomb service error in order to take the first set.
After multiple Lipscomb runs allowed the Lady Bisons to take the second set and tie the match at 1-1, UNF rebounded in the third set. The Ospreys erased an early deficit and took a 13-11 lead on an unassisted Medina kill. UNF and Lipscomb battled throughout the rest of the set until a kill by Pridgeon ended the set and gave UNF a 2-1 advantage in the match.
UNF dominated the fourth set en route to the match win. Already up by five, a Whitmire kill started a six-point run that led to an 11-point, 15-4 Osprey advantage. UNF held multiple 11-point leads and did not allow the Lady Bisons to get any closer than eight throughout the remainder of the set.
UNF returns to play on Saturday when the Ospreys host Northern Kentucky at 3 p.m., at UNF Arena.
