Box Score SPARTANBURG, S.C. – No. 61 University of North Florida men's tennis team battled to four, three set matches against USC Upstate before claiming the 5-2 win over the Spartans on Friday afternoon in Atlantic Sun Conference action at the USC Upstate Tennis Complex in Spartanburg, S.C.
UNF (7-3, 2-0 A-Sun) got off to a strong start against the defending A-Sun regular season champions, Upstate (6-10, 2-2 A-Sun), claiming the doubles point to start the match. UNF picked up wins in the No. 1 and No. 3 matches.
Sophomore Moritz Buerchner and freshman Beauregard Treyz teamed up in the one for an 8-4 win over Ramiro Blanco and Matias DiPasquale. In the No. 3 doubles match, sophomore Leonardo Nahar paired up with freshman Pedro Davisson to defeat Marco Linconir and Gianluca Paino, 8-4.
The Ospreys entered singles play with a 1-0 lead in the match and Buerchner extended UNF's lead to, 2-0 with a win at No. 1 over Edgar Rodriguez. Buerchner took the first set 6-1 and was up 5-1 in the second set before Rodriguez retired.
Davisson gave UNF a 3-0 lead in the match, winning the No. 6 in straight sets over Paino with scores of 6-0, 6-2.
Treyz wrapped up his match at No. 4 to secure the win for the Ospreys, battling Gonzalo Blanco to three sets to give UNF a 4-0 advantage. Treyz took the first set 7-5, but Blanco came back in the second for a 6-1 win. In the final set, Treyz posted a 6-1 decision to take the match.
Senior Hleb Maslau secured a win in three sets at the No. 3 after falling in the opening set, 6-4 to DiPasquale. Maslau rallied back in the second set for a 6-1 win and followed that up with a 6-4 decision in the final set.
In the No. 2, sophomore Daniel Sotomarino went to three sets with Ramiro Blanco. The Spartan player took the first set, 6-4, but Sotomarino came back in the second set with a score of 6-4. In the final set, Blanco held off Sotomarino for a 6-4 win to secure the point for Upstate.
Nahar also had a three set battle at No. 4 after claiming the first set, 6-2 over Linconir. In the second set, Linconir responded for a 6-2 win and wrapped up the match with a 6-3 win in the final set.
The Ospreys will remain on the road for an A-Sun match at Campbell on Saturday, March 12. Match time is set for 10 a.m.
