Ospreys Win Two in Opening Home Stand

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The University of North Florida men's tennis team picked up a pair of wins on Saturday with 5-2 wins over both Georgia State and Florida A&M in the home opening weekend for the Ospreys.

“I am glad we came out on top today,” said head coach Igal Buberman. “It was a tough test and the players responded well. I hope today's matches help the players to put everything into perspective and help give meaning to all the practice and effort we put in on a daily basis.”

UNF (2-1) faced GSU (0-1) in the morning and secured the doubles point early, sweeping all three matches and taking a 1-0 lead. UNF Sophomore Moritz Buerchner and freshman Pedro Davisson teamed up at the No. 1 and claimed an 8-5 win over Trenton Spinks and Breon Badger.

In the No. 2 doubles, sophomore Daniel Sotomarino and senior Hleb Maslau paired up and defeated the GSU duo of Victor Valente and Juan Pablo Gutierrez, 8-3. Freshmen Anton Rabinov and Beuregard Treyz battled in the No. 3, but secured the match with an 8-7(7-4) win over Vincent Verpeaux and Lucas Santana.

The Ospreys secured wins in the No. 1, 3, 4 and 5 singles with Buerchner winning in straight sets at the No. 1 over Gabriel Townes, 6-4, 6-3.

Sotomarino grabbed a 6-3, 6-2 win over Badger at the No. 3 while sophomore Leonardo Nahar defeated Gutierrez, 6-3, 6-4 in the No. 4. Treyz picked up a point for the Ospreys at the No. 5 with a 6-4, 6-4 win over Santana.

Freshman Pedro Davisson battled back and for with Verpeaux at the No. 6, falling 6-4 in the first set. He came back to claim the second set 6-3 before falling 1-0 (10-8) in the final set.

The Ospreys faced FAMU (0-1) in an afternoon match and got off to a quick start, grabbing the doubles point early and swept all three matches.

Buerchner and Davisson teamed up at the No. 1 for an 8-6 win over Takura Happy and Chide Gabriel. Sotomarino and Maslau paired up at the No. 2 for a sweep over FAMU's duo of Maurice Wamukowa and Temuera Asafu-Adjaye. In the No. 3, Rabinov and Treyz secured an 8-4 win over Levan Clark and Michael Moore.

In the No. 1 singles, Buerchner battled with Happy, the 2010 MEAC Freshman of the Year, going to three sets. Buerchner fell behind with a 6-4 loss in the opening set before battling back to take the next two sets, 6-4, 6-4.

Maslau secured a 6-4, 6-2 win over Clark at the No. 2 while Sotomarino defeated Wamukowa, 6-2, 6-1 in the No. 3.

In the No. 4, Nahar scored for the Ospreys in a three set match against Gabriel. Nahar claimed the opening set 6-4 before falling 6-2 in the second set. He came back in the third, taking a 6-3 win to secure the match.

Rabinov had a three set bout at the No. 6 with Asafu-Adjaye. The UNF freshman claimed the first set 6-3, but fell in the next two sets with scores of 6-3, 6-2.

The Ospreys will be back in action in a three game road swing beginning with UNC Wilmington on Friday, Feb. 4.
