CHARLESTON, S.C. – The University of North Florida volleyball team fell to College of Charleston, 3-0 on Friday night at the Carolina First Arena during the first day of action at the Holiday Inn Charleston Riverview Invitational hosted by CofC in Charleston, S.C.
Sophomore Paige Pridgeon led the Ospreys (2-9) with 11 kills while senior Jessica Catelano added eight. Freshman Britt Claessens tallied 27 assists and on the defensive side sophomore Nicole Baran notched 12 digs.
The Cougars (8-4) were led by Sarah Havel with six kills. Elyse Chubb and Madelyn McGinnis added five kills each. Chubb also tallied six blocks on the defensive side. Cole Dawley put up 27 assists and Paige Johnson had 13 digs.
College of Charleston got a quick lead in the first set, taking an 11-6 lead. UNF closed the gap to four, but the Cougars responded with a 9-1 run to go up 20-8. CofC took a 1-0 match lead with a 25-14 win in the opening set.
The two teams kept the score close early in the second set with the Cougars holding a 10-7 advantage. The Cougars scored the next four points to go up 14-7. UNF would get no closer than seven as CofC claimed the second set, 25-16.
In the third set, CofC again got off to a quick start, taking a 14-7 lead. The Cougars were up 19-12 before the Ospreys responded with seven straight points, tying the set at 19. CofC regained possession, taking a 22-20 lead, but UNF again answered, tying the set at 22.
The Cougars scored the next two, leading 24-22, but the Ospreys had one more chance as a kill from Catelano closed the gap to 24-23 and gave possession back to the Ospreys. Havel would record one of her six kills on the final rally to secure the set, 25-23 and the match for the Cougars.
UNF will be back on the court on Saturday, Sept. 18 at 10:30 a.m. against Central Michigan. The Ospreys will follow with a 5 p.m. match against Radford. All matches will be played at the Carolina First Arena.
