JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The University of North Florida volleyball team fell to Charleston Southern, 3-1 (20-25, 25-19, 23-25, 20-25) on Saturday afternoon at UNF Arena during the 2010 Best Western Invitational.
Leading the Ospreys (2-7) was sophomore outside hitter Paige Pridgeon with 26 kills. Sophomore Dagnija Medina and senior Jessica Catelano added nine and seven kills, respectively. Freshman Britt Claessens posted 47 assists and sophomore Nicole Baran had 14 digs on the defensive side.
For the Bucs (3-6) Amanda Hill posted 21 kills and a match-high 25 digs. Amy Nokes notched 21 assists.
The Ospreys held an early in the opening set, but the Bucs came back, tying the set at nine. UNF reclaimed the lead, but CSU again responded to tie the set at 15. CSU took the lead with a 6-1 run to go up 21-16. The Bucs held on to take set one and a 1-0 lead in the match.
UNF again took an early lead, up 9-5, but the Bucs came back to tie the set at 10. The Ospreys reclaimed the lead on the next rally. CSU never got closer than two (20-18) as the Ospreys claimed the second set to knot the match at two sets each.
Both teams went on service runs in the third set with UNF taking the early lead at 14-10. The Bucs responded with their own run to go up 19-16. UNF took the lead back at 22-20, but CSU tied the set at 23. Charleston Southern scored the final two points of the set to go up 2-1 in the match.
CSU got out quick, taking a 16-8 lead. The Ospreys threatened late as they cut the gap to two at 17-15. UNF was again within two at 18-16, but that is as close as the Ospreys would come as the Bucs took set four and the match.
UNF will be back on the court tonight against Illinois Chicago in the 7 p.m. game of the Best Western Invitational at UNF Arena.
