DeLAND, Fla. – No. 64 University of North Florida women's tennis team defeated Stetson, 4-1 on Friday evening in the semifinals of the 2010 Atlantic Sun Conference Women's Tennis Championship.

The Ospreys (19-2) came out strong, picking up the doubles point to start the match. Sophomore transfer Danielle Day and freshman Melanie Aguirre teamed up at No. 2 to defeated Unnati Purushotham and Shannon Gunning, 8-4.

In No. 1 doubles, the No. 90 ranked pair of sophomore Aline Berkenbrock and senior Raquel Castro fell behind early in the match as No. 60 ranked Carolina de los Santos and Valentina Galbarini took a 5-3 lead. Castro and Berkenbrock would not back down and rallied to win 8-6 and give UNF the 1-0 lead in the match.

“I think we handled our first postseason appearance very well,” said head coach Rodrigo Puebla. “We were very excited and getting a first round bye didn't help our nerves. With this being our first conference tournament match, we didn't know what to expect, but we came out and played very well and we played very well under pressure against a good Stetson team. Our No. 1 and No. 2 doubles played great matches to get us started early on.”

Berkenbrock, the 2010 Atlantic Sun Player of the Year, pushed the Ospreys to a 2-0 lead in the match with a 6-3, 6-1 win at No. 1 singles over de los Santos. Berkenbrock improves her singles record to 21-0 on the season.

The Ospreys picked up another point at No. 5 to take 3-0 lead in the match as Aguirre dropped Gunning, 6-4, 6-2. UNF secured the win with Castro's victory at No. 2. The senior defeated Galbarini, 6-3, 6-0. 

"Raquel, Aline and Mel continued their great play into the singles matches," Puebla said. "They were able to pick up the three points we needed to secure win for us."

UNF will face the winner of the second semifinal between No. 1 ETSU vs. No. 4 Campbell. Match time is set for 1 p.m. on Saturday, April 17 at the Mandy Stoll Tennis Complex in DeLand, Fla.
