DeLAND, Fla. – The University of North Florida women's tennis team defeated Atlantic Sun preseason favorite, Stetson, 4-3 on Saturday afternoon in DeLand, Fla.
The Hatters were picked to win the A-Sun in the 2010 preseason poll after returning a pair of all-conference selections from last season.
UNF (8-1, 2-0 A-Sun) picked up the doubles point as sophomore Aline Berkenbrock and senior Raquel Castro teamed up in the No. 1 to defeat the No. 37 ranked pair of Valentina Galbarini and Carolina de los Santos, 8-5.
Sophomore transfer Danielle Day and freshman Melanie Aguirre secured the doubles point with an 8-5 win over Breanna Atkinson and Katherine Nowicki in the No. 2.
Berkenbrock continued her winning ways into the singles matches with a 6-3, 6-1 win over Galbarini in the No.1. Day also picked up a win in singles play, defeating Unnati Purushotham, 6-4, 6-3 in the No. 3.
Junior Lauren Holton also secured a point for the Ospreys with a 6-2, 6-1 win over Jennifer Miller in the No. 6 singles match.
The Ospreys will return to the court for a four match home stretch beginning with Eastern Kentucky on Tuesday, March 9 at 2 p.m.
