JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Freshman Anna Budinska and sophomore Paige Pridgeon combined for 26 kills as the University of North Florida volleyball team picked up a 3-0 (26-24, 27-25, 25-22) win over Stetson on Friday night in the team's Atlantic Sun opener.
“I thought we had good team chemistry tonight,” said head coach Kevin Campbell. “We worked all week on hitting efficiency and it got better. The team played with great energy and we executed well.”`
Both Budinska and Pridgeon had 13 kills each for the Ospreys (3-12, 1-0 A-Sun). Budinska hit 37.9 percent in the match while Pridgeon also picked up 10 digs for her eighth double-double of the season. Senior Jessica Catelano added seven kills and notched four aces. Freshman Britt Claessens tallied 39 assists while on the defensive side sophomore Nicole Baran posted 22 digs and senior Marshay Greenlee had five blocks. Sophomore Dagnija Medina had five kills and three aces and two blocks.
For the Hatters (1-16, 0-2 A-Sun), Kaley Melville and Sam Freeman had 10 kills each. Kelli Carneal notched 34 assists and Monique Russell had 21 digs.
The Ospreys got out early in the first set as Catelano knocked down three straight aces to put UNF up 6-1 early. UNF held on to the lead, but Stetson rallied back and tied the set up at 18. The two teams traded points over the next several rallies and were tied at 24. Back-to-back kills from Pridgeon and Medina gave the Ospreys the points to take the first set and a 1-0 lead in the match.
In the second set, Stetson took the lead early and led by five at 19-14. UNF responded with a 7-3 run to close the gap to 22-21. The Ospreys kept the score close and tied it at 24. UNF and Stetson were tied again at 25, but Pridgeon and Medina again put together back-to-back kills to claim set two and a 2-0 lead for the Ospreys.
Stetson had a 16-10 lead midway through the third set. Medina tallied back-to-back aces to close the gap to two at 19-17. The Ospreys tied the match at 20 off a kill from Budinska. Stetson and UNF were again tied at 22, but the Ospreys closed out the set with three straight points to win the set and the match.
UNF will be back on the court on Saturday, Oct. 2 when the Ospreys host Florida Gulf Coast in a 3 p.m. match at UNF Arena.
