BOX SCORE
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The University of North Florida volleyball team fell to Florida Gulf Coast, 3-0 (22-25, 16-25, 21-25) on Saturday afternoon in Atlantic Sun action at UNF Arena.
UNF (3-12, 1-1 A-Sun) was led by a balanced offense with senior Jessica Catelano posting nine kills. Freshman Anna Budinska had eight kills and sophomore Paige Pridgeon notched seven kills. Freshman Britt Claessens had 30 assists and on the defensive side sophomore Nicole Baran recorded 16 digs while fellow sophomore Dagnija Medina had five blocks.
“I think as a team we're getting better,” said head coach Kevin Campbell. “We passed well and executed better on offense better than we have, but we made some mental errors throughout the match that we just can't afford to do against a team like this. Gulf Coast played great defense and at times frustrated our offense. I saw some great things in our blocking and I think our team has really good chemistry and our attack is well balanced. We just need to work on the mental focus.”
For the Eagles (4-12, 1-1 A-Sun), Chelsea Lyles and Adrianne McNally had 11 kills each. Camil Dominguez notched 36 assists and Holly Youngquist had 23 digs.
In the opening set, the two teams went back and forth with six tied scores with the last coming at 14. The Eagles took a two point lead, but the Ospreys kept it close and trailed by just two at 22-20. FGCU scored on the next rally, to take a 23-20 lead, but UNF took the possession back and had a chance at 24-22. A kill from Lyles on the next play would give the Eagles the point for the win and a 1-0 lead in the match.
The Eagles took an early lead in the second set, but the Ospreys came back and tied it up at 11. That is as close as UNF would come as FGCU went on a 14-5 run to close out the set and take a 2-0 lead in the match.
FGCU jumped out to a 12-3 lead in the third set, but UNF fought back, closing the gap to four at 12-8 behind the serving of Pridgeon. The Ospreys continued their 14-5 run and tied the set at 17. The Eagles regained possession and extended their lead back to three, 20-17. UNF would get no closer than two as the Eagles closed out the set and claimed the match.
The Ospreys will be back on the court on Tuesday, Oct. 5 at Bethune-Cookman. Match time is set for 6:30 p.m. in Daytona, Fla.
