BOONE, N.C. – North Florida took the first set, but William & Mary proved too strong, taking the next three sets to pick up the 3-1 win (25-20, 18-25, 15-25, 18-25) in the 5 p.m. match on Saturday at the Appalachian State Invitational in the Holmes Center, Boone N.C.
We had a great weekend,” UNF head volleyball coach Kevin Campbell said. “We came together as a team and learned a lot about each other. We are ready to move forward and ready to get started with conference play next weekend.”
Junior middle blocker Kaley Read led the Ospreys (4-3) with 16 kills. Junior setter Jessica Catelano had 25 assists while junior Nallelis Sanfeliz had nine digs. Read along with junior outside hitter Danielle Lerch earned spots on the All-Tournament team.
For the Tribe three players tallied double digit kills. Erin Skipper and Lindsay Kresch each had 13 kills while Lauren Powell added 12. Cassie Crumal had 31 assists and 11 digs.
The Ospreys came out strong in the opening set behind the serving of Sanfeliz, taking a early 7-2 lead. UNF held on to the lead throughout the opening set with the Tribe cutting the lead to four at 22-18. North Florida rolled to the win with kills from Dawidowicz and Read. With the 25-20 win, the Ospreys took the 1-0 advantage in the match.
William & Mary took the early lead in the second set and was up by six at 16-10. UNF would cut the lead to three at 19-13 off a kill by Read, but that is as close as the Ospreys would come as the Tribe took set two 25-18 to knot the match at two sets each.
The Tribe controlled set three from the beginning, taking a 10 point lead at 16-6. UNF would not get within striking distance during the set and W&M won set three 25-15, going up 2-1 in the match.
W&M jumped out to a 10-5 lead in the fourth set. The Ospreys cut the lead down to one at 12-11 with an ace by Dagnija Medina. William & Mary responded with a 4-0 run to g up 16-11, but UNF would again close the gap, to pull within three (17-14). That is as close as the Ospreys would come in the final points as W&M closed out the set with an 8-4 run to secure the set 25-18 and the match.
North Florida will return to the court on Sept. 11 when it travels to Nashville, Tenn. to open Atlantic Sun Conference action. The Ospreys will play Lipscomb in a 7:30 p.m. (EST) contest. They will also face Belmont while in Nashville on Sept. 12 at 3 p.m. (EST).
