Ospreys take one of two at USF

UNF and USF split a pair of 11-6 decisions

TAMPA, Fla. – After more rain delayed baseball action between the University of North Florida and South Florida Tuesday night, UNF closed a win by an 11-6 score from last Wednesday's suspended game at Harmon Stadium before the Bulls notched a victory by the same score in the nightcap.
On Wednesday, UNF (22-29) took a 7-6 lead when freshman TJ Gavlik smacked a two-RBI, go-ahead single just before the second weather delay of the night forced the game to be postponed until Tuesday. Tuesday brought another stretch of rain delay, but once play began UNF turned it on.
The Ospreys pushed a single run across the plate in the sixth and seventh innings and added two in the eighth while senior Mike Gottlieb (2-0) earned the win and fellow seniors Phil Rorabaugh and Spencer Jones tossed the final three innings in scoreless fashion.
However, USF (32-20) came out swinging in Tuesday night's full contest, scoring six runs in the opening frame. UNF junior Justin Preckajlo accounted for the Ospreys' first run of the game with a solo home run – his sixth of the season – in the second inning, and junior Preston Hale sparked his stellar game in the third inning.
Hale doubled in the third inning and drove in two runs to cut the Bulls' lead to 6-3, but the home team got back both runs in the bottom half of the frame. After USF picked up another run in the fifth, Hale stepped in the batter's box with the bases juiced in the sixth inning, and he did not disappoint.
Doubling for the second time in the game, Hale drove in three more runs to again reduce USF's advantage to only three runs. But once again, the Bulls responded by plating another two runs in the bottom of the sixth to up their edge to 11-6. UNF put two runners on base in the seventh but could not manage to score a run, and the game was called in the seventh inning.

Junior Paul Morales (0-1) was tagged with the loss Tuesday night after allowing six earned runs on three hits in no official innings pitched. Teddy Kaufman (3-4) tossed five innings to grab the win, striking out eight and giving up three earned runs on six hits.
The 2009 season will come to a close for the Ospreys this week when UNF hosts Kennesaw State for an A-Sun series at Harmon Stadium. The Owls will visit for a single game Thursday at 7 p.m. and a doubleheader Friday at 1 p.m.
