Near-heroic rally falls short

Kevin Martin records two new career highs

Box Score

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - A five-run seventh inning led the University of North Florida baseball to a near-heroic comeback on Sunday against Jacksonville, but the Dolphins were able to shut down the Ospreys in the last two innings and hand UNF an 8-7 loss at Sessions Stadium.

UNF (5-8, 1-2 Atlantic Sun Conference) trailed 8-2 through six innings, but a two-run single by junior David Eldredge and a monstrous three-run home run by junior Kevin Martin in the top of the seventh helped get the Ospreys back into the game.

The Ospreys loaded the bases with redshirt freshman Andrew Karmeris, junior Preston Hale and junior TJ Thompson, which set the table for Eldredge to hit a bloop single into center field to drive in Karmeris and Hale. With two outs and in an 0-2 hole, Martin got tough and crushed a Billy Schlee fastball to right center for an over 400-foot home run that also drove in Thompson and Eldredge.

Hale put the Ospreys on the board first for the second-straight game when he doubled to left center in the top of the first, allowing senior Brian Wilson to score after leading off the game with a single through the right side.

JU (6-5, 2-1) put the pressure on in the bottom of the third, putting up six runs. JU's Esterlin Perozo started it off with a two-run single off UNF starter John Atteo, which was later followed by an RBI sacrifice fly by Jeremy Gillan and RBI single by Thomas Myers.

The Dolphins capped off the scoring with a two- run home run to center field by Alex Martinez off UNF reliever Antonio Franzese.

Martin helped the Ospreys pull to within 6-2 in the top of the sixth with a double placed perfectly inside the right field line to drive in junior Ryan Puskar, who led off with a double of his own. But despite the promising start to the inning, the Ospreys ended the inning with two runners left on base.

JU put up two more runs in the bottom of the sixth when Opachich hit a two-run double off UNF reliever Jonathan Turner, which proved to be the difference in the game.

Atteo (1-2) picked up the loss after tossing 2.1 innings and allowing five runs. Senior RHP Spencer Jones tossed 2.1 solid innings of relief in which he allowed just one hit and struck out two.

Martin finished with career-highs of three hits and four RBI. Hale tied his career-high of four hits, which was also a game high.

The Ospreys will return to action at 7 p.m. on Tuesday and Wednesday for a two-game series with Troy at Harmon Stadium. Both games will be broadcast live on WBOB-AM 1320 in Jacksonville.
