SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The University of North Florida men's tennis team skidded to a three-match losing streak Monday when No. 71 USC Spartanburg continued to roll through Atlantic Sun Conference action with a 7-0 victory against the Ospreys.
UNF fell to 9-8 on the season and 4-4 in the A-Sun while the nationally-ranked Spartans jumped to 19-2 (7-0 in league play). The Ospreys dropped decisions to No. 60 East Tennessee State and Winthrop last week.
The lone victory of the afternoon for the Ospreys came at the top doubles spot. Senior Federico Levi and freshman Marc Misanovic won their fourth in five tries by knocking off Renzo Airaldi and Javier Tori, 8-3. However, the Osprey tandem's effort was not enough, and Upstate took the doubles point with an 8-5 victory at No. 2 and an 8-4 win in the third slot.
Singles play started in the home team's favor and finished in the same fashion. Sophomore Edgar Graham was dealt his fourth loss of the season, moving his record to 13-4. Nationally-ranked No. 110 Ramiro Blanco defeated freshman Marc Misanovic' 6-1, 6-4 for one of Upstate's three straight-set singles wins.
Levi, freshman Marcos Chiaretti and junior Kurt Gattiker all forced their opponents to three sets, but each came out on the losing end. Gattiker topped Leandro Osorio 7-5 in the first set, but Osorio tallied 6-2 and 6-3 scores in the second and third sets, respectively.
After spending four days away from home, the Ospreys will return to the UNF Tennis Complex for its home finale against Campbell on Friday and will close the season with a SunTrust River City Rumble bout at Jacksonville next Wednesday.
