Bats lively in 15-11 win

Ospreys get a hit from all but one lineup spot

Box Score

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - The University of North Florida baseball team clobbered its way to a win in a 15-11 slugfest against George Mason in the final game of the 2009 Kennel Club Classic at Harmon Stadium on Sunday.

UNF (3-6) pounded out a season-high 18 hits and had all but one spot in the lineup record a hit. Sophomore Michael Smith had career-highs of four hits, four runs scored and four RBIs to go along with a home run and triple. Sophomore Kyle Dahl also had a round-tripper, giving the Ospreys a total of 10 for the weekend.

Senior RHP John Frawley (1-0) picked up the win after tossing a solid 7.0 innings in which he allowed five runs (three earned) and struck out five while scattering 10 hits. It was his second career win as a starter and second time in his career he struck out at least five batters.

After the Patriots put up four runs in the top of the first, Smith quickly answered in the bottom of the first when he took advantage of the 25 mile per hour plus winds and lifted a ball high into the sky and over the left field fence. It was the beginning of a run barrage in which the Ospreys 13 unanswered runs.

Smith got things going again in the bottom of the second when he drove in sophomore Robbie Collier on an RBI single to center. Sophomore Sam Testa followed it up when he walloped a double to left field to drive in junior TJ Thompson. UNF put up another run when junior Preston Hale reached on an error by GMU shortstop Brent Weiss, which allowed Smith to cross the plate.

The Ospreys didn't let up in the third and fourth, scoring a total of nine more runs. Dahl and freshman TJ Gavlik were the first to score in the fourth inning when a Collier single up the middle brought them in. Hale duplicated the feat moments later when he drove in Thompson and Collier on a single up the middle.

Smith drove in two more runs in the bottom of the fourth on a two-run single that drove in Collier and Gavlik. Testa drove in another run when he had an infield single, which allowed Thompson to score. Hale capped off the scoring with a two-run double to right field that allowed Testa and Smith to cross the plate.

UNF added another run in the bottom of the sixth when Smith led off the inning with a triple to center and Testa drove him in with an RBI groundout to first. Dahl added UNF's final run when he smashed a solo home run to left center in the bottom of the seventh.

Hale finished with a season-high four RBIs, while Collier scored a career-high three runs and tied his career high of three hits. It was the highest combined run total of a game UNF has been involved in since Feb. 23, 2008, when the Ospreys beat Mississippi State 17-9.

The Ospreys will return to action at 6 p.m. on Wednesday when they travel to Tallahassee, Fla., to take on the No. 5 Florida State Seminoles. The game will be broadcast live on WBOB-AM 1320 in Jacksonville.
