with double-digit kills

Strong BCU squad sends UNF to 3-1 loss

Box Score

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - Despite a strong late rallying cry, the University of North Florida women's volleyball team dropped a 3-1 match (17-25, 14-25, 25-21, 23-25) to a tough defensive Bethune-Cookman squad on Tuesday night.

UNF (6-7) got double-digit kills from Agata Dawidowicz, Danielle Lerch and Kaley Read, led by Lerch's season-high 14. Lerch also put up an eye-popping .435 hitting percentage. Even though the Lady Ospreys got strong performances from those three, they weren't able to combat BCU's .323 hitting percentage.

"We received a serious wake-up call today," head coach Kevin Campbell said. "Bethune- Cookman is a strong defensive team, and they battled us tough. I'm excited to get back to practice with the team to make improvements."

Chelle Ticeson hit .609 for the Wildcats and had a match-high 16 kills. The Lady Ospreys hit just .193 through the first two sets while allowing BCU to put up a .367 hitting percentage, which allowed the Wildcats to claim the first two sets.

Dawidowicz helped UNF fire back in the third set with seven kills and a .500 hitting clip, while Read also hit .500 and put up four kills. UNF hit .382 as a team in the third set compared to BCU's mark of .276, which was the only set of the night the Lady Ospreys were more accurate than the Wildcats.

UNF went up by as many as six in the third set before BCU battled all the way back to pull to within 22- 21. The Lady Ospreys took control from there and got consecutive kills from Dawidowicz, Read and freshman Shawna Metcalf to cut the Wildcats' match lead to 2-1.

The Lady Ospreys breathed fire in the fourth set when they went on a 9-3 run to up 22-15. It looked as if UNF was going to bring the game to the deciding fifth set, but BCU had other plans. The Wildcats outscored the Lady Ospreys 10-1 for an improbable comeback, shattering UNF's near amazing rally.

Freshman Lizzy Manno led UNF on defense with 11 digs, while sophomore setter Madie Belvin had 38 assists. Dawidowicz finish with double-digit kills for her third-straight match.

The Lady Ospreys will return to action at 5 p.m. on Friday against Atlantic Sun Conference foe Campbell in Buies Creek, N.C.
