Box Score
BUIES CREEK, N.C. – Sophomore
Kaley Read put up a match-high 23 kills and a .341 hitting percentage in leading the University of North Florida women's volleyball team to a 3-1 win (25-21, 27-25, 21-25, 26-24) over Campbell in Atlantic Sun Conference action on Saturday.
Read was arguably more impressive on defense with a career-high 24 digs and four blocks, which was a match high along with freshman
Shawna Metcalf and Campbell's Ashley Weers. It was Read's fifth double-double this season. Senior
Bary Rasmussen was UNF's other leading attacker with 11 kills.
“We played consistently and really pushed ahead toward the end of the game," head coach Kevin Campbell said. "Campbell fought really hard, but we outmatched them offensively. It wasn't our best match, but it was good to get a win and play consistently together."
The win snapped a four-match losing streak for UNF (7-7, 5-3 Atlantic Sun Conference), which recorded its third four-set victory this season. The Lady Ospreys controlled the majority of the match and never trailed Campbell by more than four in any set.
Read helped propel UNF to a set one win with six kills and a .400 hitting percentage. Campbell was able to cut the UNF lead to 16-14 in the later moments of the set, but the Lady Ospreys consistently pressured the Camels and outscored Campbell 9-7 the rest of the way to take a 1-0 match advantage.
UNF was able to record the same outcome in the second set but had a more exciting way of doing it. After falling behind 17-14, Campbell was able to come all the way back and eventually take a 24-23 lead.
Despite being on the brink of dropping the set, UNF didn't give in. Consecutive kills by Read allowed the Lady Ospreys to go up 25-24, and another kill by Read gave UNF a 26-25 lead. Rasmussen teamed up with sophomore
Danielle Lerch on the next point to throw down a block and put the Lady Ospreys up 2-0 in the match.
After dropping the third set, UNF took care of business in the fourth, getting a combined nine kills from Read and Rasmussen. The Lady Ospreys looked like they'd run away with the set with a 20-13 lead, but the Camels battled back to tie it at 24. With the most crucial point in the match staring them in the face, the Lady Ospreys accepted the challenge and ended the match when they got back-to-back kills from Metcalf and Lerch.
Sophomore
Madie Belvin finished with 48 assists, which was a season-high for a four-set match. Freshman
Julie Fye tallied 12 digs, while junior
Agata Dawidowicz notched 10 digs and three blocks.
UNF will return to action at 6 p.m. on Friday against A-Sun foe Stetson in Deland, Fla., and will follow it up with a 5 p.m. contest against Florida Gulf Coast next Saturday in Fort Myers.
