CARY, N.C. - It started off as a dream come true for the University of North Florida baseball team, but the Ospreys couldn't keep the momentum going after scoring first and fell 9-2 to No. 2 North Carolina on Tuesday.
With two outs in the top of the first and sophomore Preston Hale on first, senior Travis Martin clobbered a 2-1 Adam Warren fastball over the right field fence to give UNF a 2-0 lead over the might Tar Heels. It turned out to be the only offense the Ospreys could put on the board.
UNF (26-21) had just one hit through five innings and churned out only four hits, which was the lowest total since March 2 against Florida Gulf Coast when the team collected two hits. Junior RHP Ty Pryor (5-5) picked up the loss after allowing three runs on five hits in 1.2 innings pitched.
The Tar Heels (39-8) quickly tied it in the bottom of the first when Kyle Shelton drove in Dustin Ackley with an RBI double and Chad Flack drove in Shelton with a sacrifice fly. UNC tacked on runs in the second and third to go up 4-2. In the bottom of the fifth, the Tar Heels put up two more and put up three insurance runs in the bottom of the eighth.
The Ospreys used four different pitchers. Sophomore RHP Tucker Pryor went 5.1 innings of relief and allowed three runs on six hits. Sophomore T.J. Thompson extended his hitting streak to 10 games.
Martin tied his own record for most consecutive hits with seven, dating back to May 3 against Jacksonville. He finished 1-for-3.
UNF will return to action at 6 p.m. on Wednesday against UNC. The game will be broadcast live on WBOB-AM 1320 in Jacksonville and on ACCSelect.com.
