BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. - Even pouring rain couldn't stop the offensive firepower of the University of North Florida baseball team on Thursday in its 9-3 win over Atlantic Sun Conference foe Gardner-Webb.
UNF (28-25, 17-14 A-Sun) got more than enough support on the mound from starting RHP Ty Pryor (6-5), who baffled the Bulldogs in 7.0 innings of work. Pryor struck out seven and allowed three runs (two earned) on seven hits to pick up the win. His brother, Tucker, closed out the final two innings in a near dominating performance, allowing just one hit while striking out two.
Freshman Robbie Collier led the Ospreys with a season-high three hits and three RBIs to go along with a run scored. Sophomore T.J. Thompson and senior T.J. Gaudy each notched a double.
Thompson got the Ospreys started in the top of the first when he led off with a double to straight-away center that hit the top of the wall. Consecutive groundouts by senior Chad Knight and sophomore Preston Hale brought Thompson in to score to give UNF a 1-0 lead.
GWU (25-27, 14-17) took a brief 3-1 lead in the bottom of the first, but the Ospreys answered swiftly with two runs in the top of the second on a two-run single from Collier to knot the game. In the top of the fourth, Collier did more damage when he hit a hot- shot single to right field, causing GWU right fielder Jamall Kindard to over run the ball. Not only did it bring Gaudy in to score, but it also allowed Collier to come all they around to cross the plate.
UNF tightened its grip on the game with four additional runs in the top of the fifth. Knight kicked it off with an RBI single through the right side of the infield, allowing sophomore Michael Gropper to score. Hale drove in Thompson in the next at-bat with a single to up UNF's lead to 7-3.
GWU's Ryan Maxa aided Knight in scoring moments later when he tossed a wild pitch. Senior Travis Martin capped the scoring with an RBI groundout.
The Ospreys left just three on base and were 7-for- 15 with runners in scoring position. UNF recorded over 10 hits for the first time since May 4 against Jacksonville, which was the end of a string of eight games with 10 hits or more.
UNF will wrap up its series with the Bulldogs at 1 p.m. on Friday with a doubleheader. Live stats will be available on UNFOspreys.com.
